Special Weather Statement From NWS Midland-
Sleet and snow to change over to freezing rain
across the area tonight!

Light freezing rain is starting to fall here at my home in Carlsbad at 8:45 AM this morning. Light sleet fell for a few minutes around 4 AM this morning. A spotter report out of the Atoka and Artesia areas at 7:48 AM indicated that light sleet was falling there with some light accumulations on the back of vehicles.

An amateur radio operator in Clovis is reporting heavy snow falling now with the visibility down to one block, with 1/2" on the ground. Light snow is being reported in Roswell. Numerous accidents are being reported up and down I-40 in and around the Albuquerque area, and eastward due to black ice.

A wintry mixed mess of freezing rain, sleet, and snow is forecast to continue across the area until around midnight tonight. A few thunderstorms may also occur, which would potentially produce heavy bursts of snow and sleet. Snowfall accumulations of 1" - 3" is currently forecast for the area, but locally heavier totals may occur. The upper level trough responsible for this mess is still centered well to our west, so the worst of the weather is expected to occur later today and tonight.

Local roadways could easily become extremely slick, icy, and impossible to travel upon in some areas. Its possible that we could see some road closures later today or tonight. For the latest road conditions please visit these sites; New Mexico Roads, Texas Roads.

  1. I could tell the cold air push into Abq was going to be far stronger than what was forecast...and sure enough, it was! And so far, the warming today is far less...37F before noon, thick overcast.
