Summary:
Prior to yesterday, June 11, 2012, conditions within the fire area were unsafe for entry to perform damage assessment. The damage assessment team, composed of New Mexico State and Lincoln County emergency management personnel, and Southwest Area Incident Management Team members entered portions of the burned area yesterday, and report that 224 residential structures and 10 outbuildings were destroyed. The assessment is substantially complete. The initial reported loss of 35 structures was based on preliminary information which was incomplete.
The southwest side of the fire was the most active today, with fire aggressively backing downhill in light fuels. The Very Large Air Tanker was utilized to make one drop on this front, effectively cooling it off so firefighters could take direct action. Around the ski area, crews mopped up and removed hazard trees. One small spot fire was detected on the Mescalero Reservation, which was quickly contained and suppressed.
On the south side, some burnout was accomplished around the switchbacks on NM 532. This operation will continue tomorrow. West of Alto, crews brought fire down along the containment line to tie in with Eagle Creek drainage. Mop up and patrol was in place along the east side, and on the north side crews prepared dozer line into Nogal Canyon. Structure protection, mop up and line improvement continued on the northwest flank.
