To say that we are having a wet summer or year here in southeastern New Mexico rainfall-wise would be incorrect. Most of southeastern New Mexico (Chaves-Eddy-Lea Counties) is running roughly 2" - 4" below normal despite the rainfall we have received so far this month and in May. Some spots in the Sacramento Mountains are running 6" - 8" or more below normal. So most of us continue to remain in the "Severe-Extreme Drought" category.

Most of us have already received twice, or nearly twice the amount of rainfall so far this year than we received in all of 2011. So we are definitely better off than we were last year rainfall-wise. However, we have a long ways to go before we end this historic drought that we continue to suffer from.

So far this summer our annual summer monsoon has been somewhat frail as far as producing widespread heavy rainfall totals are concerned across southeastern New Mexico. Its still early in the season so this could change between now and the end of September when the official end of the monsoon occurs. It does not yet appear that this years El Nino is contributing much to our rainfall totals. The latest forecasts indicate that this may not happen until August or September. Time will tell.

The Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction!

  1. Capitan, Cloudcroft and Roswell look insanely dry, with only spots near you OK. Missed again up here with only .03" last night - more rain 20 miles S. Hope we can all share in what Tucson is getting.

  2. Its crazy to think that I have had more rain so far this year in Carlsbad than Cloudcroft has.
