Its a beautiful day across southeastern New Mexico. You just can't hardly ask for any better weather than what we have going on today. As of 12:30 PM this afternoon my thermometer has already climbed up to 68F.

But a look back into the local historical climatology records reminds us that January can be see some brutally cold temperatures as was the case on January 10th, 11th, and 12th in 1962.

January 10th, 11th, 12th, 1962 Cold Outbreak.

I was only four years old when this historic event occurred in southeastern New Mexico. So no I don't remember it...but a lot of local folks a little older than me do. Some locations in the valleys had colder temperatures than some of the mountain locations.

As is typical with many really cold arctic outbreaks there wasn't a lot of snowfall...but enough to make a difference. Cloudcroft had 20" of snow on the ground, Ruidoso 4", Elk 3.5", Artesia and Carlsbad had 3" on the ground, and Roswell had  1".

Carlsbad established its all-time record low temperature of -18F on the morning of the 11th. Lake Avalon also recorded a low of -18F that morning. Artesia checked in with a low of -20F, the Bittler Lakes Wildlife Refuge -22F, and Roswell -24F. Capitan recorded the lowest temperature in the local area with a low of -29F on the morning of the 11th. They had 4" of snow on the ground.

Eagle Nest in the northern New Mexico Sangre de Cristo Mountains recorded a low of -47F.
