Historic Blizzard On The Way For New Mexico & West Texas.

This Blizzard/Winter Storm Will Be One To Remember.

Valid @ 5 PM MST Saturday, Dec 26, 2015.

Merry Christmas everyone. A day late and a dollar short for a White Christmas for most of New Mexico, but make no mistake about it...Mother Nature is going to deliver a whopper of a snowstorm starting Saturday and lasting into Monday. This one will be one for record books and one we will be telling our grandkids about for a long time.

The powerful cutoff mid-upper level low will bottom out over northern Mexico south of the New Mexico Bootheel Saturday night and then slowly move eastward towards West Texas by Monday morning. Unless it stalls or slows down some.

Impacts & Hazards!

Historic Blizzard - Winter Storm.

A dangerous and life threatening winter storm will begin impacting New Mexico Saturday morning with conditions deteriorating across the state during the day from west to east. A full blown blizzard will be underway Saturday night into Sunday from the Central Mountains eastward across the northeastern, eastern, and southeastern plains of New Mexico. And across parts of West Texas from the Panhandle southward to the Andrews area.

Snowfall totals in the areas affected by the blizzard are expected to be measured in the feet in some areas. Northeasterly winds sustained at 25-40 mph with gusts to 50-60 mph are forecast to create snow drifts of over five feet. Whiteout conditions will occur with the visibility dropping to zero at times. Heavy snow, blowing and drifting snow will make travel impossible in many locations Saturday night into at least Sunday. In fact travel if you must in case of an emergency, that is if you can. Travel is not recommend locally Saturday night into at least Sunday.

Life threatening conditions will occur and anyone caught outdoors or stranded on area highways will be in great danger. Snow drifts may bury vehicles and northward facing homes, barns, sheds, and other buildings. These damaging wind gusts may also down power poles and lines which may cause some folks to lose power. Wind chill values will drop down to below zero at times. Once our temperatures fall below freezing Saturday night they are forecast to stay below freezing for the next week and into the New Years Holiday weekend across southeastern New Mexico.

Livestock and pets will be in danger if left outside unprotected in these harsh conditions. I expect that the Oilfield in the area will be greatly impacted by the impending blizzard. All travel locally may come to a halt making it impossible for anyone to get to where they are trying to go, or get back home or where you came from.

Please keep up to date with the very latest information on this Historic Winter Storm.
