Major Winter Storm Heading To New Mexico!

Captured At 9:32 AM MST Thursday Morning.

Valid At 5 AM MST This Thursday Morning.

As our latest winter storm departs the area this morning a second storm is already in the jet stream pipeline headed our way. It is forecast to dig to the southeast today into Saturday before closing off over central Arizona on Saturday. This second inbound winter storm is forecast to be stronger, colder, and slower moving than the one that dumped our latest round of snow yesterday. This will cause some forecasting headaches to be sure.

This Mornings US GFS 500 Millibar (18,000') Forecast.

Valid At 5 PM MST Saturday.

This Mornings Canadian (GEM) 500 Millibar (18,000') Forecast.

Valid At 5 PM MST Saturday.

Last Nights European (ECMWF) 500 Millibar (18,000') Forecast.

Valid At 5 PM MST Saturday.

Up until Saturday at sunset the models are doing a pretty good job as far as track and timing of the upper level storm. This mornings Canadian and last nights European models are a little stronger and a tad further south with the storm by sunset Saturday than the US GFS model. This mornings run of the NAM model is a tad further to the north, near Douglas, Arizona. Trying to figure out what happens after Saturday night as far as the track and speed of the storm is the challenge/headache. Closed and or cutoff upper level lows can be a pain to forecast...and this one will certainly pose some challenges.

Current thinking (as of 10 AM this morning) is that snow will move into the western and northern areas of the state this afternoon and increase in aerial coverage and intensity on Friday. Friday all indications are that a Major Winter Storm will be unloading over much of New Mexico. Heavy to very heavy snowfall is forecast from this storm over much of the state.

At this time (as of 10 AM MST Thursday) the hardest hit areas are expected to be across the Northern and Central Mountains, the South-Central Mountains (including the Capitan and Sacramento Mountains), the Northeastern and Eastern Plains, and parts of the Southeastern Plains. Reference the Albuquerque National Weather Service forecast graphic posted above for snowfall totals.
The hardest hit areas will be anywhere along and east of the mountains from the Colorado border south to the southern Sacramento Mountains. These areas are forecast to receive anywhere from 8" to 2 feet of new snowfall! Blowing snow and drifting snow will be a problem in some areas as well.

Very Dangerous To Life Traveling Conditions!

Valid At 5 PM MST Friday, December 28, 2018.

Widespread dangerous to impossible travel conditions are forecast to develop Friday into Saturday and maybe beyond in some areas of the state. Life threatening winter weather conditions are likely to occur in some areas as heavy to very heavy snow along with blowing and drifting snow buries some of the states roadways.

If you get caught out in the open on the states roadways while driving in near to blizzard conditions there is the possibility of  becoming stranded on some roadways...putting your life in danger! Travel plans may need to be changed are canceled altogether Friday into Saturday.

Now Is A Good Time To Remember The Pasts Lessons!

See My Past Blog Posts In The Right Hand Sidebar Of My Weather Web Page For More On This And Other Local Winter Storms.

Please remember that Northeastern, Eastern, and Southeastern New Mexico as well as parts of the nearby areas including the mountains and West Texas has a long history of people getting stranded on area roadways during severe winter storms and blizzards. More than 3,000 people were stranded in Vaughn on US hwy 285 during the Christmas week blizzard of 1997. Hundreds were stranded on local roadways during the December Christmas week blizzard of 2015.

Civil Emergencies were declared in Chaves, Eddy, Lea Counties as well as hundreds of local residents were caught out in the open on New Mexico's roadways during the blizzard of December 27th, 28th, 2015. Those rescuers trying to get to them ended up becoming stranded and needing to be rescued. One to two feet of snow fell and drifted up to 10 feet deep and more across the local area. Snow stayed on the ground for up to a month in parts of SE NM.

Visibilities will be reduced to zero in some locations for hours! Wind chill values will drop below zero in some locations Friday night into Saturday morning. For those of you planning on traveling Friday into Saturday and possibly beyond you are strongly advised to be aware of current weather and road conditions before you venture out! A wrong choice or decision during this impending Major Winter Storm could threaten your life and those with you. Rescuers may not be able to get to you to help you either. We saw this happen in Chaves, Eddy, Lea, Lincoln, and Otero Counties during the Christmas week blizzard of 2015. The rescuers ended up being rescued.

What About Southeastern New Mexico?

Tough call for sure. Current forecasts call for a wintry mix of rain changing over to freezing rain and snow Friday afternoon into Friday night. With the current forecast storm track Artesia stands to get 4" to 5" of snowfall and Carlsbad an inch or two. Roswell 6" to 8". Hobbs less than an inch.

Take this with a grain of salt. If the upper level storm sinks just another 50 to 100 miles to the south then we will get buried too. The European and Canadian models are hinting at this. This GFS and NAM model say no.

Bottom line is that as more additional data becomes available to our local National Weather Service Offices, changes in our local weather forecasts will be issued by this afternoon and possibly again early tomorrow morning. The current Winter Storm Watches will likely be upgraded and additional watches, warnings, and or advisories may be issued. Please check my main weather web page often for the very latest on this impending Major Winter Storm.
