A thick plume of smoke aloft is being carried eastward from the West Coast fires into the Desert Southwest and beyond including New Mexico. This layer of smoke is thick enough to show up on satellite images (above) and obscure our normally cobalt blue skies in New Mexico. There were a few cumulus clouds in our afternoon skies yesterday afternoon. I took the top two photos from our backyard in Carlsbad, New Mexico this morning.
