All Time Low Temp Records Still Stand - Feb 8,1933.

This Could Have Been A Scene In SE NM On Feb 8, 1933.

There are some historical weather events that to this day are hard to image. One of those occurred on February 8, 1933 in New Mexico. To say that it was cold that day is the understatement of the century. Dulce recorded the lowest temperature in the state with a reading of -48°F.

Remarkably after establishing an alltime low temperature (that still stands today) of -35°F on the 8th Artesia climbed up to 80°F on the 24th of the month. Thats a temperature difference of 115°F experienced during the month of February 1933. That's crazy. Note also that Cloudcroft at 8,751' in the southern Sacramento Mountains was the warmest community in the local area. This was because arctic airmasses are notoriously shallow (usually less than 10,000' thick) and the coldest readings that morning were high on the Caprock and in the Pecos Valley.

Carlsbad recorded its second coldest temperature during this outbreak with -17°F. On January 11,1962 the Carlsbad Airport dropped down to -18°F to establish their all time record low temp which still stands today.

Roswell established their second coldest temperature during this event with a reading of -24°F. On the morning of January 11,1962 Roswell once again dropped down to -24°F. Roswell's all time record low temperature of -29°F established on the morning of February 13,1905 still stands.
