Our next storm is getting underway with lowland rains, a few thunderstorms, and high mountain snows developing across the northern mountains of the state.

A fast moving cold front entered the southeastern plains of New Mexico early this morning. With it came cooler temps with this afternoon highs ranging mostly in the low-mid 60's. Thursday will be a little warmer with highs in the 70's ahead of our next approaching storm from the west. Rain and thunderstorms return Thursday afternoon into Saturday morning.

This Hail Fell 2-3 Miles East Of Lake Arthur, NM on Wednesday, Oct 21, 2015.

A nasty Severe Thunderstorm rolled through the Artesia, Cottonwood, and Lake Arthur areas on the evening of Wednesday, October 21, 2015. Reports from the public indicated that hail was pea to quarter size in Artesia, as large as Tennis Balls in the Cottonwood area near Mill and Bolton Roads. Ping pong to golf ball size hail was reported in south Carlsbad. Wind damage was also noted in the Cottonwood area north of Artesia. 24-hour rainfall reports by the public in the Cottonwood and Lake Arthur areas ranged in the 2"-6" neighborhood.

Hurricane Patricia has sustained winds of 175 knots with gusts to 215 knots or 200 mph with gusts to 247 mph! Her central pressure has bombed out at an almost unbelievable 880 millibars or 25.99 inches of mercury! This makes Catagory 5 Hurricane the strongest Hurricane ever measured by the National Hurricane Center.

As Of 4:30 AM MDT This Morning.

Radar estimated that 4" of rain fell southwest of Roswell along the Rio Felix arroyo yesterday afternoon and evening. This is indicated by the white shaded area on the graphic above.

Right on cue thunderstorms broke out over the area late yesterday morning and really got cranked up by the afternoon. A few of these were severe. Ping pong ball size hail (1.5" in dia) was reported in Sacramento in Otero County at 3:27 and 3:45 PM MDT. Golf ball size hail was reported in a couple other places in the state with many quarter size hail reports. See these reports here.

Severe thunderstorms will be possible today across southeastern Arizona, and the southern one third of New Mexico including potions of the eastern plains and the southeastern plains. Large hail and damaging thunderstorm wind gusts in excess of 60 mph will be the primary threats. Although an isolated tornado or two cannot be ruled out.

Another Wet Week Ahead With An Increased Risk For Heavy Rains & Flash Flooding.

Get ready for another round of thunderstorms which will likely produce heavy rains along with an increasing risk for flash flooding, and perhaps a few severe thunderstorms this week. A few thunderstorms will pop up over southeastern New Mexico and nearby areas this afternoon and will increase in coverage and intensity Tuesday into Thursday.

Flash flooding along the Dark Canyon Arroyo watershed southwest of Carlsbad and in the city itself is ongoing this morning. This runoff is a results of the heavy rains that fell yesterday afternoon into the overnight hours...and the past week. The water depth this morning at 7:00 AM MDT this morning was 5.7' and is forecast to crest at 16.6' by this afternoon. This may change if and when additional heavy rains fall over the local area...which are forecast to happen.

Severe thunderstorms are once again forecast to break out over the local area today into tonight. These storms will be capable of producing large hail, damaging thunderstorm wind gusts, heavy rainfall that may cause localized flash flooding, and deadly could to ground lightning. There is even a slight chance a few of the stronger supercell thunderstorms may produce an isolated tornado or two.

Early this morning the strong mid-upper level closed low that is responsible for our latest round of active weather was located over southern California. This storm is forecast by the models to continue digging slowly to the southeast and by Thursday it should be located near the El Paso, Texas area. There are concerns that it may linger just south of the US and Mexican border into the weekend, thus agitating our next heavy rain and flash flood event that begins later today and continuing into at least Thursday.

Low clouds and fog have most of eastern and southeastern New Mexico socked in this morning. But look closely and you can see the higher peaks of the Sacramento and Capitan Mountains poking up above the clouds and fog. This is indicated by the dark spot in the clouds.

Severe thunderstorms broke out of southern New Mexico Saturday afternoon and late Saturday afternoon over Eddy County. Quarter (1.0" in dia) to hen egg size hail (2.0" in dia) fell in the Mesa and Las Cruces areas yesterday afternoon. Nickel size hail was later reported in Hope and Lakewood in Eddy County. As a line of severe thunderstorms rolled into Carlsbad at 6:30 PM strong wind gusts and heavy rainfall was noted with lots of street flooding.
