Arctic air grips most of New Mexico this morning. Low temperatures across the local area have ranged from the single digits to the mid teens. Wind chill values this morning across the area range from near zero to near -20°F. Our highs today in SE NM will generally be in the teens and 20's.

A powerful upper level closed low located over southern California this morning is forecast to move slowly east and southeast towards southern New Mexico by Saturday morning. The exact track and speed of this storm will determine just where the heaviest snows will fall...which as of this morning still are uncertain.

Mid-level moisture from the Baja Region is beginning to get ingested into the southwesterly flow aloft ahead of the storm which will help to moisten up the mid levels of the atmosphere and further the chances for more widespread and heavier snows over the area.

Arctic Moving South Through NE NM.

Arctic air has entered northeastern New Mexico and will continue its southward invasion tonight. The front will arrive in southeastern New Mexico around or shortly after midnight. A very cold airmass will settle in across the area behind this front tonight into Friday.

Falling Temps & Very Cold Wind Chills.

Temperatures will fall into the the upper teens to the mid 20's tonight into sunrise tomorrow morning. High temps on Tuesday across the local area will range from near 20°F in Clovis, to the upper 20's to near 31°F across the rest of the local area. Wind chill values will drop down into the teens tonight and the single digits Tuesday. Wind chill values will drop down into the single digits and near zero Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Below zero wind chill values will occur in the mountains.

As the arctic air pushes up against the central mountain chain Tuesday and Tuesday night an east canyon high wind event will develop. These winds are forecast to gust up to around 45-55 mph in the Albuquerque Metro area Tuesday into Tuesday night. Wind chill's will drop down to near zero in the Albuquerque area.

Brutal and dangerous wind chills will exists across far northeastern New Mexico in Union and Colfax Counties Tuesday and Tuesday night with readings as low as -25°F. The rest of northeastern and eastern New Mexico will experience wind chills from -15°F to 0°F.

Our low temperatures in southeastern New Mexico will drop down to near 10°F to near 20°F Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing from early Tuesday morning through at least Thursday.

Wintry Mix.

Valid @ 5 PM MST Friday, January 2, 2015.

A mix of light snow, freezing drizzle and or light freezing rain, and sleet will occur off and on over the area Tuesday into Thursday. Depending upon the exact track of the upper level low to our west, a heavy snow event still looks possible later this week. Especially Wednesday night into Friday. There is the potential for significant snows in the mountains and across the east-central and southeastern plains of New Mexico Thursday into Friday.

Dangerous to difficult driving conditions are expected across the area tomorrow into Friday due the combination of cold temperatures, dangerously cold wind chill values, and the mixed wintry precipitation.

Winter Returns Monday Afternoon Into Next Week.

Potential For Major Winter Storm!

Valid @ 5 AM MST Saturday, January 3, 2015.

A powerful mid-upper level storm is forecast to develop over the Desert Southwest this week as it drops out of the Pacific Northwest, and closes off, becoming either a cut off low or a closed low. Just exactly where this storm tracks this upcoming week will be a key factor in determining its impacts upon New Mexico's weather.

Valid @ 11 PM MST Monday, December 29, 2014.

Valid @ 5 PM MST Wednesday, December 31, 2014.

First a strong arctic cold front is forecast to arrive in northeastern New Mexico Monday afternoon, then work its way southward down the eastern plains of the state and into southeastern New Mexico late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.

Much colder weather will be in store for the area starting Monday night and continuing into at least next Friday. With the track and timing of the approaching upper level storm still not nailed down, its not certain just how cold we here in southeastern New Mexico and nearby areas will get. But make no mistake a change to much colder weather is coming. For now it appears we at least see our high temperatures remain in the 20's and 30's from Tuesday into Thursday, maybe longer. Its still possible that we will drop below freezing Monday night or Tuesday morning and not get above freezing again until Thursday or Friday.

Valid @ 5 PM MST Sunday, January 4, 2015.

A mixed bag on wintry precipitation looks likely across the area Tuesday into the end of the week...maybe into next weekend. Again the details are uncertain at this time but it appears that we will have a mix of light rain, light freezing rain and drizzle, snow, and sleet. How much, where, and for how long is unknown. The latest run (18Z) of the US GFS Experimental model hammers parts of eastern, southeastern New Mexico, and West Texas with heavy snow late next week. Other models don't. I have a feeling that this storm is going to be difficult to forecast.

Convective Showers & Virga Near Artesia.

With cold air aloft and a stout northerly flow a few convective showers developed over southeastern New Mexico Tuesday afternoon. Photo #1 was taken just south of Artesia looking north. #2 was taken at the junction of US Hwy 285 & Richey St. in north Artesia. #3 & #4 were taken in Cottonwood north of Artesia. We encountered a quick temperature drop from 50F to 42F on my truck thermometer in once of these showers just north of Artesia with a brief mix of light rain and snow pellets.
