2026 Monsoon Outlook & How Will This Years Developing El Niño Impact Us?

Image
May 17, 2026. Slurry Drops. Seven Cabins Fire - Capitan Mountains. The Albuquerque National Weather Service Office (NWS) has released its 2026 New Mexico Annual Summer Monsoon Outlook . I've uploaded some of their maps and graphics below.  For simplification purposes, I have listed some of our southeastern New Mexico and Sacramento Mountains' selected highest summer monsoon rainfall totals (June 1st through September 30th) below. Note the official start of our annual monsoon is June 15th and runs through September 30th. What I've noticed about our highest summer monsoon rainfall totals across southeastern New Mexico and the Sacramento Mountains is that they are extremely variable. This year's summer outlook calls for a wet start to our monsoon in June over all of the state. Current long-range forecasts in the outlook call for a normal monsoon for the eastern half of the state this summer (June-August).  Chances for an above-normal monsoon from the central mountain chain...

Widely Scattered Showers & T-Storms Tonight Into Wednesday - Some Severe - Update On The Seven Cabins Fire!

Image
May 17, 2026. Seven Cabins Fire - Capitan Mountains. Updated at 6:15 PM MDT.  A cold front backdoored its way south and west into southeastern New Mexico early this morning, a little faster than forecast. Cooler air has overspread the eastern half of the state east of the central mountain chain. So our highs today across the southeastern plains will mostly be in the 80s. Southeasterly winds will increase low-level upslope flow from the Gulf tonight into Wednesday. This, combined with a series of shortwaves passing overhead, will help destabilize the atmosphere enough to produce widely scattered rain showers later tonight.  Low clouds, areas of fog, and light drizzle are forecast to develop over the eastern and southeastern plains tonight.  Widely scattered to scattered showers with a few thunderstorms will dot the landscape on Wednesday. Our chances of getting wet are in the 20% to 60% range tonight into Wednesday, with the best bet of getting rain in Lea County and acros...

Near Record To Record Heat Today Into Sunday - The Latest On El Niño.

Image
May 8, 2026. Hondo, New Mexico. New Mexico's weather in May is interesting to say the least. Over time, we've seen it all this month. From raging forest and rangeland fires, drought, high winds and duststorms, late winter snows, hard freezes, heat waves, severe thunderstorms with tornadoes, very large hail, heavy rain, and flash flooding. May usually marks the beginning of our severe weather season in southeastern New Mexico, which normally lasts through June. Our severe weather season can start as early as March and last through July in some years. Round two usually comes in late August through October. While we suffer through daily high temps near to slightly above 100 today through Sunday with virtually no chance of getting wet, I thought I'd take a trip down memory lane with you and list some of our more notable weather extremes, starting with today. On this date in weather history...May 12th. From NWS Albuquerque: The first record of a tornado in New Mexico occurred on...

Many In NM Got Wet But Artesia Was The Big Winner In The Rainfall Category!

Image
May 1, 2026. Artesia, New Mexico.  JC Park Ditch Flooding. May could not have gotten off to a better start. Widespread soaking rains blanketed much of the state on Thursday night into Friday night. Sadly, the Gallup and Farmington areas were left out, but otherwise beneficial rains fell in many areas.  The heaviest storm total I can find fell in the center of Artesia, where the Davis Vantage Pro Personal Weather Station (HunterGriz) measured 2.67". Very close behind was the new automated XL station located at the edge of JC Park with 2.65". Another PWS in south Artesia reported 2.43". Next up was the Artesia Airport AWOS with 2.12".  The Artesia NWS Climate COOP Station reported 2.06". The XL automated station located 2.25 south of Artesia reported 1.98", and the Artesia Ag Science Center NMCC gauge reported 1.92". I did see a public comment on Facebook of 3" in Artesia. Normal rainfall for May in Artesia (1905-2026) is 1.18". So these total...

Rain & Snow To End April & Welcome In May!

Image
April 29, 2026.  Altocumulus Standing Lenticular Clouds. Streaming Northeast Off Of The Guadalupe Mountains. A backdoor cold front lies draped across the area this afternoon. Cooler temps overspread the area behind the front with the coolest highs in the 50s across northern and northeastern New Mexico. Highs across southeastern New Mexico ranged from near 70 in the Roswell area to the low-mid 80s in the Carlsbad area.  A reinforcing shot of cooler and more moist air will overspread the eastern half of the state on Thursday. Highs on Thursday will range from near 50 in the northeastern plains, near 60 across the eastern plains, and the 70s in southeastern New Mexico.  Friday will be a chilly, cloudy to overcast, and dreary day across much of the state from the central mountain chain eastward, with highs mostly in the 40's and 50's. Some 30's are expected in the northern mountains. Highs west of the central mountain chain will be in the 60s and 70s.  High temps from th...

Widespread Beneficial Rain & Much Cooler Temps On The Way - Storm Summary 4-27-2026.

April 13, 2026. Carlsbad, New Mexico. Altocumulus Standing Lenticular Clouds. Yesterday turned out to be just about as ugly as was forecast weather-wise in New Mexico. Close behind was the 87 mph gust recorded on top of Salanis Peak in the northern Organ Mountain range.  Other Peak Gusts Recorded On Sunday: Little Buro White Sands Missile Range 76 mph Jallen Hawk 40 WSMR 71 mph Delta Clipper WSMR 70 mph Pine Springs W TX Mesonet Station 69 mph Clines Corners ASOS 69 mph Dunken Raws 67 mph 3 Cross PWS N of Flying H Ranch 65 mph High Rolls PWS 64 mph Sierra Blanca Regional Airport 63 mph Albuquerque Sunport ASOS 62 mph Artesia Airport AWOS 62 mph El Paso Intl Airport ASOS 61 mph Roswell Airport ASOS 55 mph Carlsbad Airport ASOS 55 mph See the lists below via the blog post link for the rest of the reported peak gusts in NM on Sunday if you are view...

Damaging Winds/Blowing Dust/Extremely Critically Dangerous Fire Weather Conditions Today!

Image
April 25, 2026. Carlsbad, New Mexico. Altocumulus Standing Lenticular Clouds. New Mexico's weather today into Tuesday will be on the ugly side, especially today. Today's themes include damaging winds, widespread blowing dust, and critically dangerous to extremely critically dangerous fire weather conditions.  Southwest to west winds are forecast to become sustained at 30 to 40 mph with gusts near 60 mph over the central mountain chain and eastern New Mexico.  High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories remain in effect for much of the state through this evening. Southwest to west winds are forecast to become sustained at 25-35 mph with gusts near 55 mph in the Wind Advisory areas. A High Wind Warning remains in effect for the Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains of Eddy and Culberson Counties through 9 PM MDT Monday evening. West winds sustained at 40 to 60 mph with gusts near 80 mph are forecast. This includes the Carlsbad Caverns National Park and the Guadalupe Mountains National P...

Critically Dangerous Fire Weather Today - Damaging Winds/Blowing Dust Sunday!

Image
April 21, 2026. High-Based Dry T-Storm. Looking North From The Carlsbad Truck Bypass. New Mexico's fire weather season is upon us, and we already have a couple of fires active across the state. The Tusas fire near Sapello, NM, in San Miguel County, is the largest. See the Watch Duty Map link below (via my blog post link) to view all current fire activity in the state. The Otero County Electric Cooperative has cut power to some residents in the Alto area north of Ruidoso as a precaution due to the Red Flag Warning and high winds. See their link and Facebook article below via my blog post link.  We may have to deal with fire weather conditions until the start of our annual summer monsoon, which normally begins around the middle of June. However, we have entered neutral El Niño conditions with some forecasts indicating that  El Niño  may return by June. We can only hope for an early and wet start this year.  There is some hope that an upper-level low will drop into the ...

New All-Time March Record High Temps - Recent Rainfall Totals - El Niño By Summer?

Image
January 30, 2026. Devon Energy Yard - In Atoka, South Of Artesia. New All-Time New Mexico March 2026 Daily/Monthly Record High Temperatures.  New Mexico saw its hottest March on record (135 years of records). A phenomenal total of 141 new all-time March record high temperatures were broken in the state. With another 29 all-time monthly record highs tied. During this past March, there were 586 new daily record high temperatures that were set, with another 59 daily records tied.  There are simply far too many records set during this past March for me to list them in this blog post, so click on the link above to view them. A March to remember for sure!  Many of these new all-time monthly records across the state were set, breaking previous all-time records going back to at least 1907, and then a few days later, those new records were broken.  The Carlsbad Airport ASOS set an amazing all-time March record high of 103 on the 26th, which beat the previous records of 100 on...

Increasing Chances For T-Storms This Evening & Overnight - Severe T-Storms Saturday!

Image
April 9, 2026. Virga North Of Brantley Lake.  A deep early spring mid-upper level closed low was parked just off the northwestern coast of California late this afternoon. It will kick out a series of disturbances that will rotate northeast across the state tonight into Sunday. This, with strengthening southwesterly winds aloft, will add instability to the atmosphere tonight into Sunday.  The dryline has backed west into the Pecos Valley the past couple of mornings, producing low clouds and dew point temperatures in the 50s. It will back westward up against the central mountain chain of the state tonight into Saturday. Increasing low-level moisture in the return flow upon southeasterly winds will advect lots of moisture east of the dryline tonight and Saturday. Low clouds and areas of fog will be possible late tonight into Saturday morning.  As of 5 PM MDT this Friday afternoon, several severe thunderstorms have popped up over eastern New Mexico near Tucumcari and Clovis. ...

Next Chance Of Getting Wet This Weekend - April 3, 2026 Storm Summary.

Image
February 7, 2026. Guadalupe Mountains.  A few reporting stations picked up some decent rainfall across the state and in the Sacramento mountains from our last storm. The Cloudcroft Climate COOP Station reported .44", and the Ruidoso NWS Climate COOP Station reported .20". A PWS (Pierce Canyon) south of Cloudcroft measured .69", a PWS in Cloudcroft (KNMCLOUD 57) .59", and the Big Dipper Cabin PWS west of Mayhill measured .50". High Winds/Blowing Dust/High Fire Danger/High Mtn Snows Northern NM Return Wednesday.

Image
March 11, 2026. Dusty Sunrise In Hobbs, NM. Our afternoon high temps this afternoon in southeastern New Mexico are forecast to be near 90. Wednesday through Friday will be a tad bit cooler with highs in the mid to upper 80's. Saturday and Sunday will see highs near 70.  A Mix of wet and dry, scattered thunderstorms is forecast to break out over central and western New Mexico today. Dry lightning strikes may ignite new fires, and erratic wind gusts may produce localized areas of blowing dust from these storms.  A few light scattered rain showers will be possible over the Gila Region and Sacramento mountains on Wednesday. Nothing to write home about though.  Strong southwesterly to westerly winds will gust up to around 50 mph along and east of the central mountain chain Wednesday through Friday. Localized areas of blowing dust may develop during the stronger gusts.  The dryline will set up camp along the New Mexico and Texas state line on Wednesday afternoon before mix...

From 100 to 40!

Image
February 22, 2026. Brantley Lake Sunset. I can't believe I'm writing this, but I recorded a high temp in my backyard on my Davis Vantage Pro2 Wireless Weather Station of 103F. There have been summers in southeastern New Mexico that didn't get this hot...and it's still March. I pray this isn't an early indicator of how hot it will be this summer. The Carlsbad Airport has registered 103 so far, the Roswell and Artesia Airports 100, and the Hobbs Airport 99.  Many areas of the state have shattered their all-time March monthly high temperatures by as much as ten degrees over the past week. I'll post a summary of these in a few days. After days on end with record high temps, both daily and in some cases all-time monthly (March), a backdoor cold front will plow south and west late tonight into Friday morning through the state.  Friday will be an ugly, windy, dusty day for much of the state east of the mountains. Temperatures will drop behind the frontal passage, and f...
