Cloudcroft Ski Resort.

Over the past week, the Sierra Blanca Snotel site is down but the last report I saw a couple of days ago indicated that the latest storm had dumped 19.5" of new snow on the mountain. 

The CoCoRaHS reporting stations in and around Cloudcroft are reporting new snowfall totals of 8.0" to 12.5". 

The Alto area northeast of Ruidoso is reporting 5.0" to 8.9" of new snowfall.

The Ruidoso area 4.6" to 6.5" of new snowfall. The Capitan area 6.5".

The Mayhill area is reporting 1.5" to 2.6" of new snowfall.

Peak Wind Gusts Reported Saturday, January 30th, 2021.

Saturday was a bit unusual as far as the wind goes in Southeastern New Mexico. There was a donut hole of "less wind" than encompassed Eddy County. The highest wind gust was 55 mph at the Bat Draw Raws located near the Carlsbad Caverns Visitor Center. Guadalupe Pass (ASOS) reported a gust to 82 mph as did the Bowl Raws located just north of Guadalupe Peak.

A significant area of blowing dust was indicated on Saturday's MODIS images in West Texas. Widespread blowing dust that reduced the visibility was reported in Chaves and Lea Counties and eastward into West Texas. Notice the snow covering the Sacramento and Capitan mountains.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the southern Sacramento Mountains from 2 PM MST this Monday afternoon through 11 PM MST Tuesday night. Heavy snow, blowing snow, and near whiteout, conditions are forecast. New snowfall totals of 8"-12" are forecast with locally heavier totals. Travel will become difficult to impossible at times especially at the higher elevations.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the northern Sacramento Mountains from 5 PM MST this Monday afternoon through 5 PM MST Tuesday afternoon. Heavy snow, blowing snow, and windy conditions will make for difficult driving conditions. New snowfall totals of 2"-4" with locally 4"-8" and higher totals possible. Westerly winds gusting to 40 mph.

A Wind Advisory remains in effect for Eddy, Culberson, and southern New Mexico until 4 PM MST this afternoon. West winds sustained at 25-35 mph with gusts near 55 mph are forecast. 

Localized areas of blowing dust will occur late this afternoon into early this evening. Especially in and near our dust prone locations such as:

Highway construction sites, open, exposed, or freshly plowed farmland, and lots or any area with exposed soil. 

A High Wind Warning remains in effect for the Guadalupe Mountains until 4 PM MST this Monday afternoon. West winds sustained at 35-45 mph with gusts to near 60 mph are forecast. A High Wind Watch is in effect from Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening. West winds sustained at 35-45 mph with gusts to near 60 mph are forecast.

A slight chance for a few isolated thunderstorms across Southeastern New Mexico Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday evening. Overall widespread significant precipitation is not currently forecast to occur across the plains.

High Winds/Blowing Dust Rain & Mountain Snows Today Into Tuesday.

January 10, 2021.

This photo was taken just east of Mayhill. Looking back to the west on U.S. Hwy 82. Light snow overnight left 1/2" to 1" on the ground and by the time we got here most of it had melted. A light glazing of rime ice still coated the pine trees caused by the freezing fog overnight into the early morning hours.

8:16 AM MST Sunday, January 24, 2021.

Low level southeasterly upslope flow from the Gulf of Mexico worked its way northwestward into Southeastern New Mexico overnight. As this moist and warmer air mass traveled up the slope (caprock) it begin to cool and condense with the result being fog and drizzle across the local area. This will burn off around noontime as the atmosphere begins to mix out with strong down slopping southwesterly winds kicking. A weak dryline will get shoved into the eastern Permian Basin by tonight.

Windy This Afternoon Into Tonight.

A High Wind Warning remains in effect from 4 PM MST this Sunday afternoon through 4 PM MST Monday afternoon for the Guadalupe Mountains. West winds sustained at 35-45 mph with gusts near 65 mph are forecast.

A Wind Advisory remains in effect from 5 PM MST this afternoon through 5 AM MST Monday. West winds are forecast to increase late this afternoon to sustained speeds of 25-35 mph with gusts near 55 mph.

A strong Pacific cold front will sweep eastward late this afternoon and early this evening. Strong westerly winds are forecast to develop ahead of and behind the cold front. With gusts approaching 55 mph across the lower elevations of the Southeastern Plains of New Mexico. 

Localized areas of blowing dust will occur late this afternoon into early this evening. Especially in and near our dust prone locations such as:

Highway construction sites, open, exposed, or freshly plowed farmland, and lots or any area with exposed soil. 

Tonight a few isolated thunderstorms and rain showers may pop up in the local area with this activity forecast to increase in coverage the further east into West Texas.

Snow In The Sac's.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 4 PM MST this Sunday afternoon through 5 AM MST Monday across the southern Sacramento Mountains above 7,500'. An inch or so of snow is forecast below 7,500' with up to 4" above 7,500'. West winds sustained around 20 to 30 mph with gusts near 45 mph tonight into Monday morning may create whiteout conditions with zero visibility due to the snow and blowing snow. Wind chill values late tonight into Monday morning will drop down below zero. Travel tonight in the Mayhill, Cloudcroft, Sunspot, and Mountain Park areas may become difficult to impossible in some areas especially at the higher elevations.
