Brutal Cold Of January 11th, 1962.
January 11th, 1962 saw some of the coldest temperatures recorded in New Mexico. Eagle Nest dropped down to -47F.
Roswell recorded a low of -24F, Artesia -20F, and Carlsbad their coldest reading on record with -18F. The New Mexico State Agricultural Science Center (SEBS) located 6 miles south-southeast of Artesia recorded a low temperature of -24F. Cloudcroft recorded a low of 21F.
Previously the last cold outbreak of this magnitude occurred on February 2nd, 1951 when Gavilan record the state's lowest temperature on record with - 50F.
February 8, 1933, still stands out as the coldest in the state's history.
