Valid At 5 AM MST Thursday, November 30, 2023.

The first short wave was moving southeastward across southwestern New Mexico near sunrise this morning. A couple more will swing across the region tonight through Saturday.

Valid Today Through Saturday Morning.

Valid Today Through 5 AM MST Saturday, December 2, 2023.

Valid Today Through 5 PM MST Saturday Evening.

A Couple Of Storms To Impact The State.

A couple of short wave troughs of low pressure at the mid-upper levels of the atmosphere will swing across the region today through Saturday morning. Bringing winter weather to parts of New Mexico. Snow levels are forecast to drop down to around 6,000' over western and northern New Mexico. With snow levels down to around 7,000' over the Sacramento mountains.

Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect through 6 AM MST Saturday morning for the Jemez Mountains, the Northwest Highlands, the West-Central Mountains, and the West Central Plateau of New Mexico. New snowfall totals of 3" to 6" with 6" to 12" above 9,000' are forecast.

Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect through 6 AM MST Saturday morning for the Chuska Mountains, Far Northwest Highlands, Southwest Mountains, Tuscas Mountains including the Chama area, the Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Sandia/Manzano Mountains including the Edgewood area. New snowfall accumulations of 1" to 3" at the lower elevations, with 3" to 6" above 7,500', and 6" to 10" above 9,000' are forecast.

As of 8:30 AM MST Thursday morning there are no Winter Storm Watches, Warnings, or Advisories in effect for the Sacramento and Capitan Mountains. Storm total snowfall amounts in the Cloudcroft area are currently forecast to be in the 2" to 4" range. The Ruidoso area is expecting to see totals of an inch or less. Ski Apache may pick up an additional 3" to 7" of new snowfall. Any changes in the impending winter storms to affect the area today into Saturday morning could lead to either more snowfall than currently forecast, of less.

Strong and gusty west and northwest winds will add to travel woes in those locations receiving snowfall today through Saturday morning. Blowing snow will make travel difficult and dangerous in some locations.

Wind chill values are forecast to drop down into the single digits over the higher elevations of the Sacramento Mountains tonight.

Dense fog developed over the southeastern plains early this Thursday morning. Dropping the visibility to less than a quarter of a mile at times. As of 8 am the fog is beginning to burn off and additional clearing will occur through the morning.

A High Wind Warning remains in effect for the Guadalupe Mountains of Eddy County and West Texas through 5 PM MST this evening. West winds sustained at 35 to 55 mph with gusts near 75 mph are forecast.

A Wind Advisory is in effect for Eddy, Lea, Otero ,and southwest Chaves Counties, as well as parts of Otero County and West Texas today for west winds sustained at 25 to 35 mph with gusts in the 45 to 55 mph range.

Localized areas of blowing dust will occur during the stronger gusts especially in our normally dust prone locations such as: freshly plowed or exposed farmlands, fields, lots, and highway construction sites.

For those of us in the southeastern plains prepare to have your Christmas decorations blown around/away today. This will be our first strong wind event of the upcoming beginning of the meteorological winter which starts tomorrow (Friday).

Please check your local forecasts often today through Saturday for any additional updated watches, warnings, and advisories that may be issued by our local National Weather Service Offices. Slight changes in the forecast track and speeds of the different mid-upper level short waves could produce more or less snowfall in some areas today through Saturday morning.

Brrrr...It's A Cold Black Friday Morning!

An backdoor arctic cold front has moved southward and westward through the eastern one third of New Mexico overnight into this morning. Temperatures across northeastern New Mexico as of 9 AM MST are in the teens and 20's with wind chill temps in the single digits.

Low clouds, as seen on the visible satellite image, are banked up against the central mountain chain, and southward along the east slopes of the Sacramento, Capitan, and Guadalupe mountains. As well as across the northeastern, eastern, and parts of the southeastern plains as of 9 AM this morning.

Highs today will be chilly across the southeastern plains and will range from the 40's to the 50's. Highs on Saturday will warm a little up into the 50's and 60's. Then cool again Sunday and Monday into the 40's and 50's.

The Sacramento, Capitan, and Guadalupe mountains will see highs in the 30's and 40's today into the weekend.

A few light rain and or snow showers may break out over parts of the southeastern plains tonight but nothing significant is anticipated at this time.

Valid At 5 PM MST Saturday, November 25, 2023.

Valid At 5 AM MST Saturday, November 24, 2023.

At sunrise this morning a closed mid-upper level low was centered over central Nevada. It is forecast to move southeastward and then eastward across northern New Mexico and Colorado today and tomorrow. Saturday night into Sunday the the closed low is forecast by the models to open up, then pivot northeastward, dragging a shortwave trough across the state into Sunday.

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect today through Saturday afternoon. The Sangre de Cristo, and Tusac mountains of northern New Mexico are expecting to get up to 8" to 12" of new snowfall from this storm. With over a foot on some of the higher westward facing slopes.

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect today through Saturday afternoon for parts of northern one third of New Mexico. New snowfall totals will range from 1" to 3" across some of the lower elevations and up to 3" to 6" for some of the higher elevations in this area of the state.

At this time (as of 9 AM MST Friday morning) there are now watches, warnings, or advisories in effect for the southeastern plains, or the Sacramento, Capitan, and Guadalupe mountains.

Current NWS forecasts call for less than an inch of snowfall in Ruidoso and Cloudcroft today through Saturday. Ski Apache is forecast to get between 1" to 3" of new snow from this storm. It's always possible that these locations might see a little more snow than what is currently forecast should the storm to our northwest slide further south. But at this time nothing major is anticipated.

Rainfall/Snowfall Summary From Out Latest Storm.

Forecast models hinted that our latest storm to impact the state may produce more snow and rainfall than earlier model runs had indicated. That was true. Over an inch of rainfall from the storm was measured at several locations in Albuquerque.

Cloudcroft and nearby areas ended up with more snow than forecast. The Cloudcroft National Weather Service Climate Co-Op Station measured 4.7" of snow from this storm. Bringing their November and seasonal total to 4.7". The Sierra Blanca Snotel Site located near Ski Apache reported 3.0". The big winner in the Sac's was the Cloudcroft CoCoRaHS Station located 1.8 miles southwest of Cloudcroft with 5.0".
