Saturday, June 8, 2024.

A Haboob (large duststorm) was apparently produced by outflow winds from nearby decaying thunderstorms in the Roswell area yesterday afternoon. A measured peak wind gust of 66 mph was clocked at the Roswell Industrial Air Center (ASOS) Roswell Industrial Air Center (ASOS) at 3:54 PM MDT Saturday afternoon.

Multiple vehicles were reported to be involved in several collisions during the near-zero visibility on U.S. Hwy 285 between Roswell and Artesia. On US Hwy 285 and Ojbwa Rd, and US Hwy 285 and Orchard Park Rd, as well as on St Hwy 2.

Due to the ongoing severe to extreme drought conditions locally this area has been prone to severe dust storms this year. This area and others will continue to be impacted buy these localized blinding dust storms during high wind events until sufficient rainfall is received to allow the native grasses to recover and grow back.

Scattered T-Storms Some Severe Today Into Monday.

A cold front will sag southward through the eastern and southeastern plains this afternoon into Monday. Outflow boundaries from yesterday's crop of thunderstorms, and today's, along with an approaching upper-level disturbance will enhance the chances for scattered thunderstorms across much of the area today into Monday night.

The Roswell area is only forecast to reach the low 90's today and the mid-80s tomorrow behind the front. The Carlsbad area should see the highs this afternoon around 101F and near 90 on Monday. The Hobbs area near 100F today and the mid-80's on Monday.

Across the Sacramento mountains highs today and Monday should range from near 80F in the Ruidoso area to the mid-70's in the Cloudcroft area.

Across the southeastern plains, we have a 30% to 50% of seeing measurable rainfall today into Monday night.

The Sacramento mountains have a 30% to 60% chance of getting wet today into Monday night.

Thunderstorms are forecast to develop over the mountains and adjacent plains and congeal into an MCS (Mesoscale Convective System) late this afternoon and evening. Locally heavy rainfall may produce localized flash flooding in some areas. Of concern is the burn scar areas in the mountains and over the eastern plains.

Some of these thunderstorms may become severe and also produce large hail, damaging thunderstorm wind gusts in excess of 60 mph, and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. Localized haboobs, or large duststorms that will have the potential to suddenly drop the visibility down to near zero may also be associated with some of these thunderstorms.

Starting this coming Tuesday our chances for thunderstorms dwindle as we heat back up and return to the oven. Forecast highs across southeastern New Mexico Tuesday into next Weekend generally range from 100F to 106F. Long-range forecasts offer little hope for relief with more of the same.
