Monday.
A very stormy period of weather is shaping up today into Tuesday for southeastern New Mexico and nearby areas. Once again this Sunday afternoon scattered thunderstorms are forecast to develop over and near the Guadalupe, Sacramento, and Capitan mountains. Then strengthen somewhat as they move east, and northeast out onto the eastern and southeastern plains.
This afternoon into tonight a few of these thunderstorms are forecast to become severe producing damaging thunderstorm wind gusts in excess of 58 mph, large hail, locally heavy rainfall along with the possibility of localized flash flooding, and frequent cloud to ground lightning.
Some of these storms will once again persist well into the late night or early Monday morning hours. A few could even be severe.
Monday has an even better chance of seeing severe thunderstorms across the eastern and southeastern plains and eastward into parts of West Texas. The atmosphere is forecast to destabilize even further as the strong mid-upper level storm to our northwest approaches.
Supercell thunderstorms will be possible and these severe thunderstorms will be capable of producing large to very large hail, damaging thunderstorm wind gusts in excess of 58 mph, locally heavy rainfall along with localized flash flooding, and frequent cloud to ground lightning. Again some of these thunderstorms will last well into Monday night.
A few of the stronger supercell thunderstorms will be capable of producing tornadoes. Lines or broken lines of severe thunderstorms may also develop across the local area.
Storm total rainfall amounts between this afternoon and Wednesday morning still appear to be in the 1" to 4" range. It's possible a few spots may see even higher totals.
Tuesday will see a repeat of severe thunderstorms developing along the dry line and ahead of the approaching Pacific cold front.
Unsettled and cooler weather will dominate the late week into next weekend with our high temps only in the 70's, along with a continuing chance for thunderstorms off and on. Cloudcroft is forecast to drop down into the 30's for low temperatures starting Tuesday night. It's possible that some of the higher mountain valleys in the Sacramento mountains may see their first frost/freeze of the season late this week into the weekend.
