Feels More Like March Than December.
Our unusually warm weather will make a strong return today. Forecast afternoon high temperatures will be in the 70's across southeastern New Mexico. Carlsbad and nearby areas will be in the upper 70's. It gets better if you like March temperatures in December. Monday's highs are forecast to be in the upper 70's to low 80's. You want to go higher, ok then how about the mid 80's on Tuesday. This is just unreal.
A fast moving upper level short wave trough of low pressure will zip across northern New Mexico on Monday. Not only are we going to be unusually warm Monday, but it will be windy as well, with gusty southwesterly winds at around 20-35 mph. Hence a Fire Weather Watch has been posted for southeastern New Mexico.
Last week a grass fire broke out south of Carlsbad, in an open field and quickly spread to a nearby home in the 50+ mph wind gusts. The home and everything in it burned up, leaving a mother and her children homeless. Please refrain from any type of outdoor activity that involves the use of sparks or flame.
A stronger short wave is forecast to sweep across New Mexico by next Thursday. So another warm, dry, and windy day is forecast for us on Thursday. A cold front will drop southward down the eastern plains, and into southeastern New Mexico Thursday night. The net effect of this will be to cool our daytime high temps back down to normal levels just in time for Christmas Eve, and Christmas. Highs will be in the 50's. No snow or rain appears to be in our forecast for the near future.
The Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction!
