2011 Midland NWS Skywarn Storm Spotter Training Class Schedule.
Today is going to be another warm one with afternoon high temps around 80 to the low 80's. Unfortunately, with the springlike warmth comes the springlike winds. Southwesterly winds are forecast to kick up at around 20-30 mph with gusts near 40-45 mph this afternoon. A few stronger gusts may be possible especially near the foothills and near the mountains.
A High Wind Warning is in effect for the Guadalupe Mountains today for SW winds 35 - 45G65 mph. A Wind Advisory is in effect for Lincoln County today for W winds gusting up to near 50 mph.
Areas of blowing dust will develop across the local area by around noontime today. Sudden drops in the visibility down to under one mile with little to no advanced warning will be possible. This will be especially true near open or exposed freshly plowed farmland, fields, open lots, and construction sites.
Red Flag Warnings are in effect for all of eastern and southeastern New Mexico for today, as well as parts of West Texas. Today will be one of those days that any type of outdoor activity that involves the use of sparks or flame, should be avoided. Any grassland, wildland, rangeland, or forest fire that should develop, will have the ability to rapidly spread and grown in the strong winds and very dry conditions.
A Pacific cold front will arrive Sunday which will bring a little cooler weather back into the area. Highs on Monday will likely only be in the 60's. The prospects for meaningful rainfall or snowfall across southeastern New Mexico continue to look dim. March is typically one of the driest and windiest months of the year, so today's weather is a precursor to what we can expect next month.
The Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction!
