Cannon AFB (KFDX) Radar Outage

Updated 10/01/2025 11am The Cannon Air Force Base (KFDX) WSR-88D will remain inoperable for an extended period due to a hardware failure at the site. Parts have been ordered. There is currently no estimate on when the radar will return to service. KFDX radar is the only radar coverage for portions of eastern New Mexico. However, you may find KPUX, KAMA, KLBB, and KMAF radars useful. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Cannon AFB Public Affairs at 575-784-4131.

Photos Of Saturday's Blowing Dust & Peak Wind Gusts.

Saturday started out with dense fog blanketing Carlsbad, NM. The dryline had backed westward into the Pecos Valley. It quickly mixed eastward as the strong winds aloft begin mixing downward towards the surface.

By Saturday afternoon widespread blowing dust begin overtaking southeastern New Mexico. Yesterday's weather so reminded me of when I was a kid growing up in Arteisa in the 1960's and 1970's. I remember enduring several days in a row of high winds, and blowing dust like yesterday's event. If this drought we are currently enduring does not break this summer, then expect to see more days ahead like this. Can you spot the windmill in pictures #3 and #4?

Severe thunderstorms erupted last night as West Texas as a fast moving Pacific Cold Front overran the dryline. Click on the Midland NWS Blog for the details.
