Cannon AFB (KFDX) Radar Outage

Updated 10/01/2025 11am The Cannon Air Force Base (KFDX) WSR-88D will remain inoperable for an extended period due to a hardware failure at the site. Parts have been ordered. There is currently no estimate on when the radar will return to service. KFDX radar is the only radar coverage for portions of eastern New Mexico. However, you may find KPUX, KAMA, KLBB, and KMAF radars useful. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Cannon AFB Public Affairs at 575-784-4131.

Special Web Briefing From NWS Albuquerque.

Update At 5:45 PM MDT- A High Wind Warning has been issued for Eddy/Culberson Counties until 9 PM MDT. Southwest winds will gust up to around 60 mph. A Blowing Dust Advisory has also been issued until 9 PM MDT. Blowing dust will reduce the visibility down to 1/2-1 mile, with some areas dropping down to 1/4 of a mile, or less.

A High Wind Warning remains in effect for the Guadalupe Mountains until noon Sunday. Southwesterly winds of 35-50G70 mph are forecast today into Sunday noontime.

A High Wind Warning continues in effect for Lincoln and Chaves Counties from 9 AM this morning through 8 PM this evening. Southwesterly winds are forecast to increase to 30-45G65 mph.

A High Wind Warning remains in effect for southern New Mexico, including the Cloudcroft area until 10 PM tonight. Southwesterly winds are forecast to increase to 35-45G60+ mph today. A Blowing Dust Advisory is also in effect until 10 PM tonight for southern New Mexico.

A Wind Advisory is in effect for Eddy, Lea, and Culberson Counties from noon today through 9 PM tonight. Southwesterly winds are forecast to increase to 25-40G55 mph.

Widespread areas of blowing dust will likely result from the winds. Watch those normally dust prone locations such as open and freshly plowed farmlands, fields, lots, and construction sites. Sudden drops in the visibility down to zero will occur with little to no advanced warning. Blinding clouds of dust in these areas will pose a driving hazard on local highways.

Critically Dangerous Fire Weather Conditions will exists across the area. Any accidental wildfire will have the ability to rapidly spread and grow. No outside sparks or fires please!

Snow will fall over the higher elevations of the Sacramento Mtn's tonight into Sunday night.
