Current Weather 2.1 NNW Downtown Carlsbad, NM

Busy Three Days With T-Storms.

Severe thunderstorms broke out across parts of west Texas on Sunday. 2.5" to 3" diameter hail (hockey puck size) bombed the countryside 13 miles south of Westbrook in Mitchell County  between 4:03 and 4:12 PM CDT. At 4:23 PM a trained spotter reported a tornado moving southwest at 5-10 mph. At 4:38 PM a second tornado was reported 16 miles south of Westbrook. At 4:48 PM CDT a third tornado was reported was reported 20 miles south of Westbrook on the Sterling and Mitchell County line.

A cluster of t-storms developed across southern New Mexico and northern Mexico late last night. Just before midnight, a severe t-storm dropped 1" (quarter) sized hail on the El Paso National Weather Service Office located in Santa Terssa, 1" diameter hail also fell on Vinton, and 1.25" (half dollar) diameter fell near the office.

Southeastern New Mexico got robbed over the Easter holiday weekend thunderstorm-wise. However, the next three days look fairly busy for thunderstorms across eastern, southeastern New Mexico, and parts of west Texas. Hopefully we will get a decent rain out of this.

Round one will start this afternoon and continue into tonight across southeastern New Mexico. A short wave approaching the area later this afternoon will fire off a few scattered thunderstorms. A second short wave approaching from the northwest later tonight will give us a another round of thunderstorms. A few of these may be severe, especially later this afternoon and possibly again later tonight. Large large hail, damaging thunderstorm wind gusts, and locally heavy rainfall will be the primary severe weather threats. We have a 20% chance of spotter activation across parts of southeastern New Mexico and west Texas around 5 PM MDT this afternoon.

Round two will occur on Tuesday as yet another short wave approaches the area. It appears this morning that we have a little better chance of seeing severe thunderstorms across the area tomorrow. Large hail, damaging thunderstorm wind gusts, locally heavy rainfall and perhaps an isolated tornado or two will all be possible on Tuesday

Round three will occur on Wednesday, and this looks like our best shot at severe weather in the area. An approaching short wave, cold front, and dryline will all combine to help produce severe thunderstorms. Again, large hail, damaging thunderstorm wind gusts, locally heavy rainfall and perhaps an isolated tornado or two will all be possible on Wednesday over parts of the local area.
