NWS Albuquerque 2025 -2026 New Mexico Winter Outlook.

Image
Oct 22, 2025 Sunrise Between Hobbs & Carlsbad. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this upcoming winter is not looking good at all for New Mexico as far as snowfall is concerned. An early indicator of this was back this summer, when the Pacific Decadal Oscillation cratered to an all-time low.  The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is a long-term climate pattern that affects the temperature of the Pacific Ocean and the weather patterns around it. The PDO is a naturally occurring phenomenon that shifts between warm and cool phases, with each phase lasting around 20-30 years (World Climate Service). A brief summary of the PDO is also available from the Physical Sciences Laboratory. The chart on the upper right shows a time series of the PDO since the late 1800s. The July 2025 PDO value of -4.15 was the lowest on record. Overall, it looks like we are in for another warmer and drier-than-normal winter. This does not bode well for the state's Ski Resorts, annual snowpack,...

September 25, 2025. Near Ashland, New Hampshire. Sweater Weather In The Mornings - Shorts In The Afternoons. Some of the coldest overnight low temperatures of the season blanketed the state this morning after near record highs on Monday afternoon. This is the time of the year when we can and often do see large diurnal temperature swings between morning lows and afternoon highs.  Carlsbad reported a high yesterday of 93 and a morning low of 47. Roswell reached 90 Monday afternoon after a morning low of 44 and a low this morning of 43. The NMCC Station just NW of Roswell reported 39 this morning, and the NMCC Station just N of Roswell reported 36. The Clovis Municipal Airport AWOS reported 37, and the Smokey Bear Raws near Ruidoso 35. Bell Canyon, NW of Mayhill in the Sac's, reported a low of 26 this morning. Weed checked in with 32. The Angel Fire Airport AWOS reported 17 this morning.  It was also a tad breezy across parts of New Mexico yesterday. The Rowe NMDOT Automated Weat...

Seasonably Chilly Nights Ahead 7-Day Rainfall Totals - NOAA's 2025-2026 Winter Outlook.

Image
September 25, 2025. Meredith, New Hampshire. A cold front will sweep from west to east across the state Friday and Saturday, bringing cooler temps and drier conditions.  A second cold front will move into the state next Monday and Tuesday, and this, along with an upper-level trough of low pressure approaching the region, will cause southwesterly winds ot kick up early next week.  Overall, our daytime highs across the area will remain slightly above to close to normal, while our overnight lows will be seasonably chilly into next week.  Looking way down the road to around Halloween, all three long-range models (GFS, GEM, ECMWF) indicate that a strong Pacific storm will slide into the Desert Southwest. Although it's way too early to try and get specific with any details, the model trends indicate that this storm has the potential to bring wind and snow (higher elevations) to the state.  NOAA's 2025-2026 Winter Outlook has been released, and it's not good news for New Me...

Scattered To Numerous Showers & T-Storms/Localized Flash Flooding - Freeze Coming To W/C/N NM.

Image
September 24, 2025. Meredith, New Hampshire. Remnant subtropical and tropical moisture from former Hurricane Priscilla and Tropical Storm Raymond have been streaming northeastward into the Desert Southwest for nearly a week now. This abundantly rich moisture surge has helped produce some very impressive storm total rainfall amounts, and they are not done yet. Many locations in parts of Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico have measured 1" to 3".  Flash flooding has occurred in many areas, and among the hardest hit is the Pagosa Springs, Colorado area.  Some of the selected higher storm totals that I have been able to find include the following: Arizona: Scottsdale CoCoRaHS 9.8 NNW 6.21" Horse Mesa Dam SRP - NE of Phoenix 5.19" Renaissance Wash - E of Phoenix 4.92" Alamedia SRP - SE Phoenix 4.36" San Xavier-Black Mountain Ea 3.43" Pinaleno Park in Grahman County 3.35" Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport ASOS 3.05" Colorado: Upper San Juan Snotel - NE of ...

October 2, 2025. Carlsbad Sunset. New Mexico Fall Freeze Data . Albuquerque Intl Balloon Festival Weather History. A cold front has been slowly backdooring its way south and west across the eastern plains overnight into this morning. By sunset this evening, it will be draped along a line from Farmington to Socorro to just south of Carlsbad. Cooler air will continue to work its way south and west behind the front.  Low clouds and areas of dense fog blanket parts of the eastern plains this morning. A Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 AM MDT. Hurricane Priscilla looks impressive on this morning's satellite images, but so far, none of its subtropical moisture has found its way northeastward into New Mexico. Interestingly enough, late this upcoming week into early next week, another Hurricane (Raymond) is forecast to follow a similar track to Priscilla and eventually eject its remnant subtropical moisture into the state.   Scattered to numerous showers and t-storm...
