Widespread Beneficial Rain & Much Cooler Temps On The Way - Storm Summary 4-27-2026.
Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Altocumulus Standing Lenticular Clouds.
Yesterday turned out to be just about as ugly as was forecast weather-wise in New Mexico. The highest wind gust I could find was 88 mph recorded at the San Augustin Raws along US Hwy 70 east of Las Cruces in the Organ Mountains. Close behind was the 87 mph gust recorded on top of Salanis Peak in the northern Organ Mountain range.

Widespread blowing dust impacted southern, southeastern, and eastern New Mexico as well as parts of far West Texas and the Permian Basin late Sunday afternoon and evening. The visibility dropped as low as 1-2 miles in the Pecos Valley, locally lower, and around 1 mile across southern New Mexico.
A major change in our weather is coming, and if the forecast models are right, much of the Land of Enchantment is fixing to get wet, some areas really wet. A closed mid-upper level low is forecast to dig southeast into the northern Baja Region by Thursday. Then slide east across northern Mexico, southern Arizona, and southern New Mexico Thursday night into Friday afternoon.
A strong late-season cold front is forecast to backdoor southwestward through the eastern plains on Wednesday. Low-level upslope flow from the Gulf will increase behind the frontal passage, along with mid-level moisture streaming in from the Pacific ahead of the approaching closed low.
It appears that widespread beneficial rains with embedded thunderstorms will impact the state from Wednesday night into Saturday. The air mass associated with this incoming storm and cold front may prevent severe weather from developing across southeastern New Mexico. With high temps forecast to be in the 50s and 60s on Friday and Saturday, the atmosphere may be too stable to allow for severe storms. The jury is still out on this, though.
What we may be looking at Wednesday night into Friday is cloudy to overcast skies with areas of fog, along with scattered to numerous rain showers and a few thunderstorms from the central mountain chain eastward out onto the plains. Storm totals could be in the 1: to 3" range with locally higher totals, especially with thunderstorms that develop. Just about everyone will get wet in the state, but how much is the question.
What may end up being more of a concern for many is a flash flood threat versus a severe weather threat.
Just like that, we appear to be going from blast furnace weather with high winds, blowing dust, and extreme fire danger, to a cool, very wet pattern with sweaters and jackets needed. Just for good measure, the northern mountains above 8,000' to 9,000' may end up with a heavy wet snow out of this storm.
Typical New Mexico spring weather.- It can flip on a dime and often does. Lord knows how badly we need the rain, so bring it on!!!
