Some of the aspens in the higher elevations above 9,000' are beginning to turn in the Sacramento mountains. But given the late summer heat it appears our leaf changing season will be a little late this year. We saw numerous stock ponds, and other low spots full of water from last weeks heavy rains. That's a good thing...to have the countryside soaked up going into winter.
This Mornings Low Temperatures.
(6 AM MDT Sunday, Oct 5th, 2019).
(6 AM MDT Sunday, Oct 5th, 2019).
We dropped down to a low of 56ºF here at our home in northwest Carlsbad this morning. This is the coolest temperature we've experienced since May 19th when our low was 52ºF. A couple of personal weather stations (PWS) northwest of Mayhill in the Sacramento mountains recorded lows in the upper 30's this morning.
Northern and western New Mexico was seasonably chilly this morning with widespread lows in the 30's and 40's. A few 20's were noted in some of the higher mountain valleys. The automated weather station located 34 miles southeast of Aztec (ZTCN5 at 7,021') reporting a low of 17ºF. Fall has definitely arrived.
Ahead of the approaching cold front our high temperatures across Southeastern New Mexico will range from the 70's across the higher elevations of the Sacramento mountains, and the Eastern Plains including the Clovis and Portales areas. Far Southeastern New Mexico will see temps approach 90ºF in the Carlsbad, Loving and Malaga areas while Roswell, Tatum, Lovington, and Hobbs may not get much above 80ºF
NWS Forecast Low Temperatures Monday Morning.
Monday mornings low temperatures are forecast to range from near 40ºF in the Clovis and Portales areas to near 50ºF in the Carlsbad area. 30's are forecast for the higher valleys and communities of the Sacramento mountains. Don't be too surprised to see a few spots in the mountains dip down to near freezing.
Strong Cold Front Brings Winter To Rockies Late Week.
Valid At 6 AM MDT Friday, October 11th, 2019.
Yet another powerful early winter storm is forecast to dive southward into the Pacific Northwest by Wedneday and drop southeastward as a closed or cut-off upper level low into northeastern Colorado or southern Nebraska by next Friday. Both the ECMWF and the GFS are fairly close in their forecast tracks of this storm.

GFS Forecast Temperature Anomalies At Noon MDT Next Thursday.
Colder weather arrive late this upcoming week in the form of the seasons first strong cold front. Lows locally Friday morning behind the southward moving cold front are currently forecast to be in the 30's and 40's. I suspect that most of the Sacramento mountains will see freezing temperatures and pockets of freezing or near freezing temperatures will be possible across some of the higher elevations of the Eastern and Southeastern Plains. Temperatures behind the cold front will be dropping some 20ºF to 40ºF below normal for the date by late Thursday night into Friday.
GFS Snowfall Forecast By 6 PM MDT Next Friday.
Heavy snow is being forecast by the long range models over the central and northern Rockies eastward into parts of Nebraska, South and North Dakota, as well as eastward and northeast of those states. Light snow could even fall across parts of the higher elevations of northern New Mexico late next week.
