It's Dry, Dry, Dry In SE NM.
While much of New Mexico has seen improvement late this spring and summer as far as drought conditions are concerned this isn't the case in southeastern New Mexico. Dry, dry it remains. So far this is just one of those years where we can't seem to catch a break and get a good widespread soaking rain.
Hit and miss thunderstorms are in our forecast for today and Sunday but they will be nothing to write home and brag about. Long-range forecasts don't offer any real hope as far as meaningful rainfall is concerned either. At least for the next week anyway.
Scattered hit and miss thunderstorms are still forecast across the Guadalupe, Sacramento, and Capitan mountains each afternoon and evening today into Monday. Any one thunderstorm will be capable of dumping locally heavy rainfall with a few totals possibly over an inch. The burn scar areas will continue to be a problematic during any thunderstorm that drops moderate to heavy rain over and near them.
The northern one-third of the state will have the best overall chances for rainfall over the next week. Especially over and near the mountains. Locally heavy rainfall and localized flash flooding will be possible in these areas. And yes the burn scar areas may pose some problems as far as flash flooding goes from time to time.
A cold front is forecast to ooze southward late next week into eastern and southeastern New Mexico. This will may some relief to the local area as far as temperatures are concerned. Until then expect to continue to see our daily afternoon high temps range from near 100 to the low 100's.
