Very Cold With Dangerous Winch Chills Tonight Into Thursday.

A strong arctic cold front backdoored its way southward and westward into northeastern New Mexico last night into this morning. Then moved steadily southward into the southeastern plains this morning. My high temperature at our home in Carlsbad for today is 52 which occurred at 4:23 AM before the front arrived. The very cold airmass accompanying the front has modified a little bit over southeastern New Mexico this afternoon with temps in the 40's.

Note: Extreme Cold Warnings and Cold Weather Advisories are the new terms for the old Wind Chill Warnings and Advisories.

Extreme Cold Warnings remain in effect for Lea County and the Permian Basin of West Texas from 8 PM MST tonight through 9 AM MST Thursday morning. Wind chill temperatures as low as -5F.

Extreme Cold Warnings remain in effect for all of the Texas Panhandle, the south plains, and West-Central Texas. Wind chill temperatures in the Texas Panhandle will drop as low as -25F to -30F. Wind chill temperatures across the South Plains of Texas will drop as low as -15F. Wind Chill temperatures across the Permian Basin will drop as low as -5F. Wind Chill temperatures across West-Central Texas (San Angel and Abeliene areas) will drop as low as -10F.

Cold Weather Advisories remain in effect for northeastern, eastern, southeastern, and parts of southern New Mexico (eastern El Paso County, southern Otero, Huspeth, and Culberson Counties) from Wednesday night tonight through Thursday morning. Wind chill temperatures of 0 to 15.

Wind chill temperatures are currently forecast to drop as low as -12F in the Clovis/Portales area tonight into Wednesday morning, and the )F to 10F across the southeastern plains.

It is possible that this arctic airmass may move a little further west than currently forecast. If it does we may end up being colder than forecast across parts of eastern, southeastern, and south-central New Mexico.

By Saturday we will climb back out of the deep freeze with rising temperatures. Highs across southeastern New Mexico will be in the 60's, Sunday will see the 70's, and Monday near 80. You gotta love our wild and crazy winter-time temperature swings. And no rain or snow is in our forecasts for the next week to ten days.
