Many In NM Got Wet But Artesia Was The Big Winner In The Rainfall Category!

May 1, 2026.
Artesia, New Mexico.
JC Park Ditch Flooding.

May could not have gotten off to a better start. Widespread soaking rains blanketed much of the state on Thursday night into Friday night. Sadly, the Gallup and Farmington areas were left out, but otherwise beneficial rains fell in many areas.

The heaviest storm total I can find fell in the center of Artesia, where the Davis Vantage Pro Personal Weather Station (HunterGriz) measured 2.67". Very close behind was the new automated XL station located at the edge of JC Park with 2.65". Another PWS in south Artesia reported 2.43". Next up was the Artesia Airport AWOS with 2.12". The XL automated station located 2.25 south of Artesia reported 1.98", and the Artesia Ag Science Center NMCC gauge reported 1.92".

I did see a public comment on Facebook of 3" in Artesia. Normal rainfall for May in Artesia (1905-2026) is 1.18". So these totals were definitely impressive. Street flooding was reported in and around the Artesia area by the public.

Jimmy Powell, who lives in Hope, 20 miles west of Artesia, reported 2.50" of rainfall. A PWS in Cottonwood, north of Artesia, reported 1.91". The automated XL station on US Hwy 62/180, 30 miles west of Hobbs, reported 1.81". While the automated XL station 6.75 miles north of Jal reported 1.79".  A CoCoRaHS Station 2.5 ESE of Lake Arthur reported 1.75". A PWS in Lovington reported 1.62". A PWS NNW of Timberon reported 1.31".

The Jal NMCC station measured 2.42". The Caprock Raws measured 1.79". A PWS in south Roswell measured 1.01", while the Roswell Airport ASOS measured 1.06". The automated XL station 1.25 east of Dexter measured 1.27".

The NMCC station at Runyan Ranches in southwest Chaves County measured 1.25". The Cosmic Raws measured .90". The Cloudcroft Climate COOP Station measured .51". The Cloudcroft CoCoRaHS Station, located 1.8 miles to the southwest, measured 0.1" of snowfall. While Facebook videos showed ground cover in Cathy Canyon and at Ski Apache.

Here at our home in Carlsbad, I measured a storm total of .97", which brings my year-to-date total to 2.10", which now is 106% of normal for the year-to-date average. The Carlsbad Airport ASOS measured .68".

The Pinery Raws in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park measured 1.38".  The Bat Draw Raws at the Carlsbad Caverns Visitor Center measured 1.36", the Queen Raws measured 1.31", and the automated XL station in Whites City measured 1.13".

A heavy wet snow fell over the northern mountains, and a few heavier totals include 8.1" 2.1 ENE of Chacon, 6" 5 miles WNW of Eagle Nest Lake State Park, 6" 2 WNW of Angel Fire. Many other rainfall and snowfall totals from across the state are available in the attached maps and graphics below.

With El Niño conditions forecast to develop sometime between now and the fall, we can only hope that this is the start of a wetter and cooler pattern across the state and region. The jury is still out on whether or not this will be a super El Niño, as some are claiming, and if so, to what extent it will affect our weather.

I'm not sure what was going on with the Midland NWS Doppler Radar this past Friday. I was out driving around in the Carlsbad and Artesia areas, checking for any flooding, and encountered numerous pockets of light to moderate rain. Yet live radar returns were virtually clear in our area. I even switched over to the Cannon AFB Radar multiple times, and the results were basically the same. My guess is that the tops of the rain-producing clouds were low enough that the radar beams were overshooting them and not detecting the rainfall.

Therefore, the radar rainfall estimates above do not match or even come close to the reported rainfall totals in the Artesia area. Given the fact that several online automated weather stations reported 1.50" to 2.50"+ totals, yet the MRMS totals are only in the .25" to .50" range. Which is not even close to what actually fell and was measured in and around Artesia.
