A weak cold front is very slowly sagging southward through the southeastern plains this Saturday morning. It won't affect our afternoon high temperatures much today and Sunday. Our forecast highs are expected to climb up into the mid-upper 90's.
Our enemy of this summer's monsoon (the unrelenting and unusually strong mid-level heat dome of high pressure) will move overhead on its westward trek today and Sunday. By Monday it is forecast to be centered just west of central California off the coast.
A reinforcing surge of cooler air will push the cold front south out of the state Sunday evening and early Monday morning. Cooler air will settle in over the area Monday into Wednesday morning. Our highs on Monday are forecast to be in the upper 80's to near 90. On Tuesday we will only be in the mid 80's. Wednesday mornings lows will be a little cooler than normal with readings in the low 60's.
At least we haven't been plagued with the ungodly hot heat index temperatures that have been occuring this summer from Texas northeast to the Great Lakes area. Widespread heat index temperatures of 115º to nearly 130º have been recorded on multiple days.
Thunderstorms will continue across most of the state today except for the southeastern plains. An increase in activity is expected Sunday and Monday as the front slides through and low level moisture and instability increases. Locally heavy rains will be possible along with localized flash flooding especially over the burn scar areas today through Tuesday.
