Ruidoso Under The Gun Again!
A monsoonal surge of moisture stretches across most of New Mexico this morning. This, combined with an inverted mid-level trough of low pressure stretching northward into southern New Mexico from northern Mexico, and a Mesoscale Convective Vortex (MCV) located over southwestern New Mexico, helped to produce moderate to heavy rain over southern New Mexico overnight into this morning. A band of showers and thunderstorms are ongoing as of 9:30 AM MDT this Tuesday morning, stretching northward from southern New Mexico to the Colorado state line.
A Facebook friend in Dell City, Texas, west of Guadalupe Pass, reported 4.50" overnight.
Another round of numerous to widespread thunderstorms is forecast across much of the state today into tonight. Like last night, some of these may last into the early morning hours of Wednesday.
The greatest concerns for heavy rainfall and flash flooding continue to be first across the states' burn scars, especially the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon and the Ruidoso burn scar areas.
Ruidoso Area.
For those of you who live in or will be visiting or traveling through the Ruidoso area today into Thursday, it would be wise to be stay very alert and weather-aware. The danger of rapid, devastating, life-threatening flash flooding is HIGH! This area has been hit repeatedly over the past two years by multiple flash flood events, particularly in and near the burn scars.
Numerous thunderstorms in the Sacramento mountains (including the Ruidoso area) will be capable of producing rainfall rates of 2" per hour or more today into Thursday. Some of these may produce storm totals of 3" to 5". Excessive rainfall in a short period of time will cause rapid, potentially deadly, and catastrophic flash flooding!
Other areas of the state covered under the Flood Watches will be prone to flash flooding from numerous to widespread slow-moving thunderstorms. This will be especially true in those locations that have flooded recently, in normally dry arroyos, small streams or creeks, low-lying areas, and urban areas that are susceptible to flooding.
Yesterday afternoon, a thunderstorm five miles north-northwest of Cloudcroft produced flash flooding in the Seven Springs area southwest of Mescalero. The El Paso NWS Doppler Radar estimated 3" of rain fell near there. The Holloman AFB Doppler Radar estimated as much as 5" fell...this may be a little high in my opinion.
A Flood Watch has been issued for southern New Mexico, and northward to include portions of the central areas of the state and portions of the northern mountains. All of the Sacramento mountains are covered under these Flood Watches, including Otero and Lincoln Counties.
Northwestern and southeastern New Mexico remain the least likely areas to see rainfall this week. A few isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms will be possible across the southeastern plains, but overall coverage will be fairly sparse. Those who get lucky enough to get a storm may see some locally heavy downpours.
Long-range model forecasts continue to heat us up starting this weekend, continuing into next week. In fact, the midnight run last night of the GFS model forecasts Carlsbad (and the rest of SE NM) to reach the low 100's by this coming Sunday, topping out around 106 to 108 by next Tuesday. I hope this is wrong, because that won't be fun, but I think this model is in the ballpark.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service El Paso TX/Santa Teresa NM 630 AM MDT Tue Jul 29 2025 ...New UPDATE, AVIATION, FIRE WEATHER... .UPDATE... Issued at 625 AM MDT Tue Jul 29 2025.KEY MESSAGES... Updated at 625 AM MDT Tue Jul 29 2025 - Light rain showers will diminish in coverage this morning across the area. - The lack of instability will diminish thunderstorm chances today. The Sacramento Mountains have the best chance at seeing thunderstorms this afternoon, with a heavy rain risk. Pop-up thunderstorms remain possible elsewhere, and slightly favor the Otero Mesa and Hudspeth County this afternoon. - Deep moisture, and a more favorable upper level pattern could bring more thunderstorms into the area tonight, as an upper level disturbance drifts north from the Sierra Madres. Lack of instability is the main limiting factor. - Decreasing moisture will lead to more low to mid range Monsoon thunderstorm chances through the middle of the week, with chances more heavily weighted towards the higher terrain. - Temperatures will climb towards the weekend as precip chances sputter further. &&
