From 100 to 40!
Brantley Lake Sunset.
I can't believe I'm writing this, but I recorded a high temp in my backyard on my Davis Vantage Pro2 Wireless Weather Station of 103F. There have been summers in southeastern New Mexico that didn't get this hot...and it's still March. I pray this isn't an early indicator of how hot it will be this summer. The Carlsbad Airport has registered 103 so far, the Roswell and Artesia Airports 100, and the Hobbs Airport 99.
Many areas of the state have shattered their all-time March monthly high temperatures by as much as ten degrees over the past week. I'll post a summary of these in a few days.
After days on end with record high temps, both daily and in some cases all-time monthly (March), a backdoor cold front will plow south and west late tonight into Friday morning through the state.
Friday will be an ugly, windy, dusty day for much of the state east of the mountains. Temperatures will drop behind the frontal passage, and freezing temperatures will occur across parts of western and northern New Mexico on Friday night. Freezing temperatures and below will occur over much of the state Saturday night expect for the southern deserts and eastern and southeastern plains.
A High Wind Warning is in effect for the Guadalupe Mountains of Eddy and Culberson Counties from 3 AM Friday morning through 6 AM Saturday morning. For northeast winds sustained at 35 to 55 mph with gusts to 75 mph. Some localized wind damage may also occur.
A High Wind Warning is in effect from midnight tonight through 3 PM MDT Friday for Union, Quay, Curry, and Roosevelt Counties. For northeast winds sustained at 30 to 40 mph, gusting to 60 mph. Some localized wind damage may also occur.
A High Wind Warning is in effect from 6 AM MDT through 10 PM MDT Friday for the Middle Rio Grande Valley and includes parts of the Albuquerque Metro area. For east winds sustained at 30 to 40 mph, gusting to 60 mph. Some localized wind damage may also occur.
A Wind Advisory is in effect for the upper Tularosa Valley, including Carrizozo and the Chaves County Plains. For northeast winds from 6 AM MDT through 3 PM MDT Friday. For northeast winds sustained at 25 to 35 mph, gusting to 50 mph. Some localized wind damage may also occur.
A Wind Advisory and Blowing Dust Advisory is in effect for Eddy, Lea, and Culberson Counties and the Permian Basin from 3 AM MDT Friday morning through 8 PM MDT Friday evening. For northeast winds sustained at 30 to 40 mph with gusts to 55 mph. Some localized wind damage may also occur.
Widespread areas of blowing dust will reduce the visibility down to 1/4 of a mile to a mile. Localized areas may experience visibilities down to zero with little to no advanced warning during the stronger gusts in brownout conditions. Travel will be difficult and dangerous at times across our local roads and highways during the duststorms.
A Wind Advisory is in effect for the El Paso area eastward across southern New Mexico and parts of far West Texas from 6 AM MDT through 6 PM MDT Friday. For northeast winds sustained at 25 to 35 mph, gusting to 55 mph. Localized areas of blowing dust may occur, and some wind damage may also occur.
High-based dry thunderstorms may produce dry lightning strikes (little or no rain accompanying the thunderstorms) and virga over western and central New Mexico this weekend.
A quick warmup will commence on Sunday and Monday, with the eastern and southeastern plains flirting with 90 for highs.
