Cannon AFB (KFDX) Radar Outage

Updated 10/01/2025 11am The Cannon Air Force Base (KFDX) WSR-88D will remain inoperable for an extended period due to a hardware failure at the site. Parts have been ordered. There is currently no estimate on when the radar will return to service. KFDX radar is the only radar coverage for portions of eastern New Mexico. However, you may find KPUX, KAMA, KLBB, and KMAF radars useful. If you have questions or concerns, please contact Cannon AFB Public Affairs at 575-784-4131.

Windy Weekend Ahead.

Severe Weather Outlook Friday.

Severe Weather Outlook Sunday - Monday.

Valid At Noon MDT Sun Mar 18, 2012.

Valid At Noon MDT Sun Mar 18, 2012.

Our balmy tranquil spring weather will hang on for a couple more days. Most of SE NM will see afternoon highs in the mid 80's today, with the mid-upper 80's expected on Friday. Some of us may see the first 90-degree readings of the year on Saturday. This mornings Midland NWS forecasts for Artesia and Carlsbad have both cities at 91.

The dryline has wobbled westward into the Pecos Valley the last couple of mornings. Areas of low clouds and fog have accompanied the dryline. It will continue to wobble around W TX and SE NM into the weekend.

A very cold and potent mid-upper level trough of low pressure is forecast to dig into the Four-Corners Region this weekend, and then work its way across the state the first of next week. The latest model forecast trends move this cold spring storm a little further to our north, thus limiting our chances for any meaningful precipitation here locally.

However, the dryline will become active starting Friday, and again Sunday, as this potent storm approaches the area. Severe thunderstorms will be possible along and east of the dryline. It appears at this time that the greatest for thunderstorms and severe weather should be along and east of the NM/TX state line. This could change depending upon the exact track and speed of the cold spring storm approaching the area from the west.

Strong southwesterly winds will begin to kick up across the area on Saturday, and more so Sunday and Monday. Areas of blowing dust may also become a problem. Critically Dangerous Fire Weather Conditions will also prevail.
