Spring Temperature Roller Coaster Ride Continues.

Spring in New Mexico means turbulent weather most years. For Southeastern New Mexico and nearby areas, it typically is our windy season and more often than not our dust storm season also. Although we have had a number of high wind events this past winter and so far this spring it hasn't been too bad yet.

A short wave mid-level trough of low pressure will swing eastward across New Mexico on Thursday. Ahead of it, a warm-up will occur on Wednesday with our afternoon high temps some 10 to 15-degrees above normal. Highs over the Southeastern Plains are forecast to be in the low-mid 80's.

As this trough of low pressure sweeps across the state on Thursday it will drag a cold front at the surface across the state as well. Gusty northerly to northwesterly (30-50 mph) winds will accompany the frontal passage. There will also be areas of patchy blowing dust which will briefly reduce the visibility.

Cooler temperatures will overspread the area behind the front on Friday and will be some 5 to 10-degrees below normal. Highs are forecast to be in the low-mid 60's across the Southeastern Plains.

Saturday will start a warm-up with highs in the mid-upper 70's and Sunday will see the low-mid 80's once again.

Our spring winds return Sunday.

(Wednesday Night - Friday Morning).

Our next short wave trough of low pressure and its associated cold front will bring scattered rain and snow to parts of northern and central New Mexico Wednesday night into Thursday. Current forecasts indicate that any rain or snow that falls will be light.

March Snows Can Be Heavy.

March traditionally is our driest month in Southeastern New Mexico but there are exceptions to the rule. Heavy snow blanketed the local area on March 15, 1969. Listed below are local snowfall totals as recorded by the National Weather Climate Co-Op Stations and local airports.
