Last Weeks Record High Temps - This Weeks Next Strong Spring Storm!

April 15, 2025.
Virga Sunrise - Carlsbad, NM.

I took my cover photo this morning from C-Hill in Carlsbad. A virga sunrise. Virga is precipitation that falls from the clouds and evaporates before reaching the ground. Streaks or trails of virga are common in New Mexico as was the case this morning.

Numerous locations across New Mexico broke their daily record high temperatures this past Friday and Saturday (April 11th & 12th). Several established new daily record maximum minimum temperatures as well. I'm hoping that this isn't an early precursor to what this summer has in store for us.

Wednesday through Friday looks nasty again with high winds, blowing dust, and critically dangerous fire weather conditions. High Watches have already been issued for parts of northeastern, eastern, south-central, and southern New Mexico for Thursday. Southwesterly winds are forecast to become sustained at around 30 to 40 mph with gusts in the 60 to 65 mph range. Additional High Wind Watches, Warnings, and Advisories may be issued in the coming days for the state.

Sadly widespread areas of blowing dust are also expected especially on Thursday with the strongest and most widespread high winds. As has been the case late this winter and early this spring our normally dust-prone locations will likely experience brownouts with near to zero visibilities during the stronger gusts.

Even though much of the state except for the south-central mountains and southern lowlands received beneficial rainfall and snow last week it wasn't enough to end the drought. Critically dangerous fire weather conditions return to parts of the state tomorrow into at least Thursday. Any wildfire that develops will have the ability to rapidly spread and grow in the strong to damaging winds.

Our best shot of getting wet will be Friday through the Easter holiday weekend. Light to moderate snow and perhaps even pockets of heavy snow are forecast to fall over the western and northern moutnains. Current forecasts call for 2" to 5".

A few scattered to scattered rain showers and thunderstorms may pop up in eastern and southeastern New Mexico Friday night into Saturday, Some of these may be severe depending upon how far west the dryline sets up. West Texas currently has a better chance of seeing severe weather on Saturday.

I've rearranged the look of my weather web page and have been moving furniture around for several days. My apologies for the disruptions but I'm hoping that this new layout is more user-friendly for you. Thanks for reading and sharing by blog posts.

.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 243 AM MDT Tue Apr 15 2025

A few high terrain showers and lower elevation sprinkles across
northern and some central areas Tuesday with gusty and erratic wind
gusts being the main hazard. Warmer with breezy southwest to west
winds Wednesday before very strong southwest winds on Thursday.
These winds combined with a very dry and warm airmass will increase
the risk for rapid fire spread with the risk highest on Thursday.
Cooler areawide Friday and Saturday with lower elevation rain
showers and mountain snow across western and northern areas Saturday
shifting to northeast and east central areas Saturday evening
through Sunday morning due to a storm moving across the state. Mild
