April Winter Storm Bearing Down Upon New Mexico!
April Winter Storm Bearing Down Upon New Mexico!
As of 9 AM this Friday morning the center of the mid-upper level low was located over central Arizona and still moving south. A strong backdoor cold front is still on track to enter northeastern New Mexico this afternoon and then push southward and westward into the state overnight into Saturday morning.
Conditions will deteriorate over the state this afternoon into Saturday as the front pushes through and the winter storm to our west slides to the south of the state. A cold rain is forecast for the southeastern plains along with a few isolated to scattered thunderstorms. I wouldn't be surprised if some of us don't have a few bouts of thundersnow.
Winter Storm Warnings are now in effect for basically the eastern one-half of the state except for the southeastern plains, and the southern Sacramento and Guadalupe mountains.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the northern Sacramento mountains. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for the Lubbock area,
Over the past 48 hours, rainfall totals have been in the 1" to 2" range in parts of eastern New Mexico west and southwest of the Clovis/Portales areas. So the storm is already producing more rainfall than model forecasts in some areas.
This morning's runs of the short-range models are forecasting accumulating snow for the southeastern plains with varying amounts. This seems logical to me, but if it happens and how much will fall/accumulate will depend highly on the storm track, the frontal passage's timing, and the upper low's forward speed to our west.
Significant travel problems are forecast in the Winter Storm Warnings areas. Road closures are likely in some of these areas also. Heavy snow, blowing snow, and drifting snow along with visibilities of a quarter of a mile or less, near zero in some locals, will make traveling dangerous and life-threatening. Northerly winds are forecast to gust up into the 40 to 50 mph range in the Warnings areas.
A heavy wet snow may bring down some power lines and tree limbs so scattered power outages will be possible if this occurs. Outdoor livestock, range livestock, and pets will be at risk in the cold weather with wind chill temperatures down into the teens or lower.
Additional updates, warnings, watches, and advisories are possible today so stay abreast of your local weather conditions and be safe all. The moisture is more than welcome!!!
