Here comes the rain. A large cluster of showers and scattered thunderstorms is working southward through northeastern and eastern New Mexico. A cold front is approaching eastern and southeastern New Mexico from west Texas, as the upper-level low retrogrades westward from eastern Oklahoma.
I recorded an afternoon high of 101F here at my home in Carlsbad today. Our highs will struggle to get out of the 70's Monday and Tuesday. Widespread drought busting beneficial rainfall is forecast for the area from tonight into Thursday.
Some of this is going to be heavy, maybe even torrential in some spots. Model forecasts continue to indicate that widespread rainfall amounts this week will be in the 2" - 4" range with some locations possibly seeing much more. Each new model run changes the location of the heaviest rains and the totals but the bottom line is that much of the area is likely to get a badly needed soaking by the end of this week.
Flash flooding will likely occur across the area during this week. Remember that your vehicles do not come equipped with snorkels and fins, and contrary to popular beliefs, they do not swim. So please do not attempt to drive across flooded low water crossings, arroyos, and street intersections. These will be especially dangerous at night when its harder to tell the depth of the water.
