Our Annual Summer Monsoon Is Underway.

Use this model forecast with a grain of salt. Often times during our summer monsoon the forecast models underestimate total rainfall amounts. I think this is going to be the case over the next week. The takeaway is that most of the state is going to get much-needed relief from the drought.

Update at 1:10 PM MDT Friday afternoon:
A Personal Weather Station (Ponderosa Pines) southeast of Cloudcroft in Cox Canyon is reporting 3.01" of rainfall. Two "PWS" in Cloudcroft are reporting 1.019" and 1.12" And a PWS in Wimsatt is reporting 1.12" and another 1.45". The Hodge Podge Lodge PWS in southeast Ruidoso is reporting .75" and Pillows at Funtrackers in Ruidoso is reporting .76".
Thunderstorms have already developed over the Sacramento mountains and some are dumping very heavy rainfall. A Personal Weather Station (PWS) "Upper-End Peirce Canyon" southwest of Cloudcroft has measured 2.30" as of 12:15 PM MDT.

Earlier this morning a band of rain showers with a few embedded thunderstorms developed along a line from southwest of Carlsbad to the west of Artesia, and southwest of Roswell. The Queens Raws recorded .42" this morning and a Personal Weather Station (PWS) southeast of Artesia picked up .33". A CoCoRaHS Station in north Roswell reported .27" and a station north of Artesia measured .25". See the maps above for more details.
Thunderstorms also developed yesterday afternoon and evening over other areas of the state. A CoCoRaHS Station in Sunspot reported .34" while a station in southeast Alamogordo reported .38". See the maps above for more details and additionally reported rainfall totals.
New Mexico's annual summer monsoon is off to a start and about two weeks early this year. Over the past three weeks many areas of the state have picked up measurable rainfall but much more is needed. And the good news is that this is coming especially next week.
Forecast models call for daily rounds of scattered rain showers and thunderstorms today into next week. Hit and miss storms will be the norm today into Saturday. Then more widespread storms are forecast for Sunday into the middle of next week. Some of these storms will dump locally heavy rainfall in short periods of time which may lead to localized flash flooding. The recent fires in the state have left enormous burn scars and these areas are in the high danger category for life-threatening flash flooding.
This is the time of the year when thunderstorms develop in the afternoon often over and near the mountains and persist into the evening hours. Sometimes continuing overnight. By the end of next week, most of the state stands to pick up some decent rainfall...hopefully including us here in Southeastern New Mexico as well.
