Heavy Rains & Severe Weather Once Again - For Some.

Sunday, May 21, 2023
US Hwy 285 South Of Malaga, NM.
About 5 Miles North Of The NM/TX State Line.

Heavy Rains & Severe Weather Once Again - For Some.

Welcome to the beginning of the meteorological summer of 2023. Once again severe thunderstorms rampaged across parts of New Mexico with the most widespread activity across the eastern and parts of southeastern plains. See the storm reports below.

May was a month of extreme contrasts rainfall-wise for the state. Parts of Eddy County ended up about 1" - 2" below, while the southeastern area of the county ended up 1" to 2" above normal rainfall for the month. Then you have Curry County where May rainfall totals were 4" to 8" above normal, and Roosevelt County was 4" above normal.

Over the past 30-days a Personal Weather Station (PWS) Clovis CW3200 has measured 15.24" of rainfall. The Clovis Agricultural Science Center Station has measured 10.96" of rainfall. And the Clovis CoCoRaHS Station located 13.1 miles north of town has measured 10.26" for May, 2023. The Texacio CoCoRaHS Station picked up another 2.46" for a 24-hour rainfall total, bringing their total since May 1st, 2023 to 12.32" of rainfall.

Compare these totals to my totals here in Carlsbad of .58" for May with a year-to-date total of only 1.58". With .90" of that falling in January. I will tell you this that when our drought does break locally, it will be something to write home about.

Speaking of such...heads-up. Friday looks to be another very active day for severe thunderstorms for parts of eastern and southeastern New Mexico, and West Texas. Don't be surprised if the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) pulls its "Slight and Enhanced Risk Areas" further westward into the eastern and southeastern plains of New Mexico with tomorrow morning's update. Friday has the potential to be the most active with numerous severe thunderstorms of the seasons for parts of the local area.

The Midland National Weather Service Office is already calling for supercell thunderstorms that will be capable of producing up to soft ball size hail, severe thunderstorm wind gusts in excess of 80 mph, along with a few tornadoes!

   Day 2 Convective Outlook
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   1226 PM CDT Thu Jun 01 2023

   Valid 021200Z - 031200Z

...THERE IS AN ENHANCED RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PARTS OF
THE TEXAS SOUTH PLAINS AND PERMIAN BASIN...

   ...SUMMARY...
Strong to severe thunderstorms capable of producing very large hail,
strong gusts and a couple of tornadoes are possible Friday afternoon
and evening across parts of the southern High Plains.

   ...Southern High Plains...
Compared to previous days, relatively limited morning convection is
currently anticipated across the southern High Plains on Friday.
This will allow for diurnal heating of a moist environment, with 60s
F dewpoints potentially reaching as far west as extreme southeast
NM. A mid/upper-level shortwave trough is forecast to move across
northern Mexico during the morning and into parts of the southern
Rockies/High Plains during the afternoon, which would be favorably
timed for scattered thunderstorm development within an unstable and
   favorably sheared environment.

Relatively steep midlevel lapse rates and favorable buoyancy (MLCAPE
of 1500-3000 J/kg) will support a conditionally favorable
environment for very large hail. The strongest deep-layer shear is
expected over portions of the TX South Plains and Permian Basin, in
association with a moderate subtropical jet, and a few intense
supercells will be possible in this region, with an attendant threat
of very large hail and localized severe gusts. Low-level shear/SRH
is expected to remain relatively modest, but will be sufficient to
support a threat of a couple of tornadoes as well. An Enhanced Risk
(level 3 of 5) has been added where the greatest risk of supercells
producing very large hail (in excess of 2 inches in diameter) is
   currently anticipated.

Severe storms will also be possible farther north into parts of the
TX Panhandle, though weaker deep-layer shear may result in a mix of
convective modes. Some upscale growth is possible with time as
storms move eastward toward the TX Big Country region, which could
increase the threat of severe gusts, though weaker shear with
eastward extent may tend to limit the organization of any
   outflow-driven clusters into Friday evening.
