Blizzard & Winter Storm Warnings & Winter Weather Advisories For Southeastern, Southern NM Tonight Into Monday Night!

December 27, 2015.
Our Front Yard In Carlsbad, NM.
I measured 13" On The Ground With 3' To 10' Drifts In Carlsbad.

A dangerous winter storm will begin impacting southern and southeastern New Mexico, including the Sacramento and Guadalupe Mountains, late tonight and continue into at least Tuesday morning. Travel disruptions and road closures are likely in the warning and advisory areas.

Blizzard conditions are forecast to develop tonight in the Guadalupe Mountains of Eddy and Culberson Counties around 10 PM MST. North to northeast winds gusting up to around 50 mph, along with heavy snow, blowing and drifting snow, and whiteout conditions, will make travel next to impossible if not impossible in these areas late tonight into late Monday night. This includes the Guadalupe Pass and Queen areas.

Snowfall totals of 4" to 6" are now forecast, and it's possible that even more may fall than this. Travel through Guadalupe Pass will become life-threatening and next to impossible later tonight into Monday night. Travel through this area should be delayed and restricted to emergencies only. Anyone planning on traveling between Carlsbad and El Paso along US Highway 62/180 late tonight into Monday night may want to change their travel plans and pick an alternate route of travel.

Winter Storm Warnings are now in effect for Eddy and southwestern Chaves County from 11 PM MST tonight through 11 PM MST Monday night. Snowfall totals of 3" to 6" are forecast for the Elk, Runyan Ranches, Dunken, and Flying H Ranch areas.

Across Eddy County, 3" to 5" are forecast west of the Pecos River, and 1" to 3" are forecast east of the Pecos River. Locally higher totals are possible. Northerly to northeasterly winds gusting up to around 30 to 40 mph will create areas of blowing and drifting snow, making travel upon local highways and roads difficult and dangerous. Travel disruptions and road closures are likely in the warning and advisory areas.

Winter Weather Advisories are now in effect for Lea, Chaves, Lincoln, Otero, Culberson Counties, and parts of the Permian Basin and far West Texas from 11 PM MST tonight through 11 PM MST Monday night.

Lincoln County is expecting to see at least 3" of new snowfall with higher totals above 7,000'. This includes the Ruidoso, Ruidoso Downs, Glenco, Hondo, Picacho, Capitan, and Lincoln areas. Northerly to northeasterly winds gusting up to around 30 to 40 mph will create areas of blowing and drifting snow, making travel upon local highways and roads difficult and dangerous. Travel disruptions and road closures are likely in the warning and advisory areas.

Otero County is expecting to see at least 4" to 7" of new snowfall with higher totals possible. This includes the Sunspot, Cloudcroft, Mountain Park/High Rolls, Mayhill, Sacramento/Weed, Pinon, Timberon, Apache Summit, and Mescalero areas. Northerly to northeasterly winds gusting up to around 35 mph will create areas of blowing and drifting snow, making travel upon local highways and roads difficult and dangerous. Travel disruptions and road closures are likely in the warning and advisory areas.

Local power disruptions may occur in a few areas, especially if heavy wet snow falls on power lines, utility lines, and tree limbs, causing them to snap or break under the load.

Wind chill temperatures will fall into the single digits and teens in the Sacramento, Capitan, and Guadalupe Mountains late tonight into Monday morning. Wind chill temperatures in the teens to near twenty are forecast for the southeastern plains Monday morning.

High temperatures on Monday will range from the low to mid-30s across the southeastern plains to the low to mid-20s over the higher elevations of the Sacramento Mountains.

Travel across southeastern New Mexico from Monday into Tuesday morning is going to be a nightmare. I know this because we've experienced this before during winter storms. We already have major problems with the oil field traffic congestion, and this inbound winter storm with heavy snowfall will only exacerbate our local problems. Life-threatening conditions could easily develop with numerous accidents possible...because even on clear sunny days, we have a lot of accidents. If you don't have to travel from Monday into Tuesday morning, then don't.

Some of the forecast computer models are still indicating heavier snowfall totals than are currently being forecast. Narrow heavy snow bands could bust some of the forecast snowfall totals and end up being higher. While outside of these snow bands, totals could be less in some locales.

Changes in some of our local forecasts will be possible later today into Monday, so stay weather alert and check my main weather web page often for all of the latest on this incoming winter storm.
