Storm Summary & Rainfall Totals 6-3-2026 - Round Two Today & Tonight.
Rotating Wall Cloud.
12 Miles WSW Of Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Round two today with scattered to numerous thunderstorms developing over the Guadalupe, Sacramento, and Capitan Mountains, then drifting east and again coalescing into another thunderstorm complex, a Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) late this afternoon into tonight.
A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for Eddy, Lea, Culberson Counties and parts of the Permian Basin. Another 1" to 2" of rain with locally higher amounts may fall on top of what fell yesterday and overnight.
A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for Lincoln County through 10 PM MDT this evening for additional heavy rainfall on top of what has fallen the past couple of days. Flash Flood Warnings are already being issued for the Ruidoso area as of this writing (2 PM MDT).
Numerous thunderstorms developed Tuesday afternoon over the Guadalupe, Sacramento, and Capitan Mountains. These coalesced into a thunderstorm complex called a Mesoscale Convective System (MCS) that drifted slowly east and southeast out onto the southeastern plains and lasted until after midnight in Lea County.
Ping-pong-ball-sized hail fell in James Canyon, 11 miles east of Cloudcroft Tuesday afternoon. As this supercell thunderstorm moved east to the Mayhill area, it ended up bombarding them with tennis ball to slightly larger hail (3.5" in diameter).
The Artesia Airport AWOS measured a thunderstorm wind gust of 62 mph, and an automated NMCC Station in Lakewood measured a gust to 66 mph. A large tree in Carlsbad was also reported to have been blown down by thunderstorm wind gusts last evening. See the storm report lists below for more info.
Heavy rains accompanied this cluster of thunderstorms yesterday afternoon and overnight. I measured 1.89" here at our home in northwest Carlsbad, but a CoCoRaHS Station to my southwest in west Carlsbad measured 2.63", while the public nearby reported 2.80". Curb-to-curb street flooding was reported in parts of Carlsbad last night.
The rains will come to an end across the southeastern plains by Friday night and the Sacramento, Capitan, and Guadalupe Mountains by Saturday night. By Sunday and Monday, the plains are forecast to approach the century mark once again.
