June Rainfall Totals & Year-To-Date Rainfall Totals - Near To Record Heat Wednesday.
Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Over the past week, multiple clusters of thunderstorms and Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCS) have formed along the central mountain chain and then moved out onto the eastern and southeastern plains. Southeast New Mexico has been the big winner recently as far as heavy rainfall goes.
Here at our home in Carlsbad, my June rainfall now stands at 3.49" after this morning's early round of thunderstorms that left .26" in my rain bucket. I now stand at 2.87" above normal for the month, or 564% of normal to date for June, bringing my year-to-date rainfall to 5.80", which is 3.60" above normal, or 161% of normal for the year.
Overall rainfall over the eastern half of the state for May and so far this month has been above normal for most locations but not all. This month has had pockets of heavy rainfall while some nearby locations haven't fared so well. Typical summertime thunderstorm behavior. Hit-and-miss storms are common.
In contrast, the Carlsbad Airport ASOS has measured 1.73" so far this month, which is 1.18" above normal, bringing its year-to-date total to 2.84". Normal year-to-date is 3.48".
The Artesia NWS Climate COOP Station has measured .95" so far this month, bringing its year-to-date total to 6.75". Normal to date is 3.64".
The Roswell Airport ASOS has measured 1.12" so far this month, bringing its year-to-date total to 4.05". Normal year-to-date is 3.54".
The Ruidoso NWS Climate COOP Station has measured 1.60" so far this month, bringing its year-to-date total to 5.29". Normal year-to-date is 5.67".
The Cloudcroft NWS Climate COOP Station has measured 1.84" so far this month, bringing its year-to-date total to 9.52". Normal year-to-date is 7.65".
The Mountain Park NWS Climate COOP Station has measured .22" so far this month, bringing its year-to-date total to 5.47". Normal year-to-date is 5.01".
The Hope NWS Climate COOP Station has measured .42" so far this month, bringing its year-to-date total to 4.85". Normal year-to-date is 3.81".
The Four Corners area continues to be drought-stricken and in desperate need of beneficial soaking rains.

Wednesday's high temperatures in southeastern New Mexico will be brutal. In fact, close to tying or breaking daily record highs. Forecast high temps range from 107 to 111.
A backdoor cold front will dive southward and westward through the eastern half of the state Thursday night into Friday morning. Low-level moist upslope flow will increase behind the front, helping to set the stage for scattered thunderstorms Thursday evening through Friday night from the central mountain chain eastward. A few of these may be severe.
Another upper-level disturbance will cross over the region during this time, adding lift and instability. Once again, we may see clusters of thunderstorms forming, possibly producing locally heavy rainfall and localized flash flooding. The flash flood threat in the Ruidoso area, including the Seven Cabins Burn Scar and others, may be a problem.
