Today will be cooler behind Thursday morning's cold front. But low-level moisture has increased, so it will be muggy east of the central mountain chain. Highs will range from the mid to upper 80's in eastern New Mexico, to the low 90's in southeastern New Mexico. Southwestern, western, and central New Mexico will approach the century mark.
The Sacramento Mountains have a 50% chance of scattered t-storms this afternoon, then the faucet goes dry for the next week. Locally heavy rainfall may produce flash flooding over and downstream of the recent burn scars in the Ruidoso area.
A few widely scattered t-storms will dot the southeastern plains this afternoon with rain chances in the 10% to 20% range.
Back to the furnace starting Saturday with highs reaching 100 in southeastern New Mexico. Sunday looks very hot again with highs ranging from 105 to 108. Little change next week with highs ranging from near 100 to 106.
This morning's run of the GFS model centers the 500 millibar (18,000' MSL) monsoonal mid-upper level high over southwestern and southeastern New Mexico by Tuesday. Eventually, monsoonal subtropical moisture from northern Mexico will rotate northward into New Mexico. The question is when, of course. Long-range models hint that this may start happening in the ten-day to two-week outlook period.
