Several Days Of High Winds & Blowing Dust.
I took my photo on November 18, 2024, at the Rio Felix Low Water Crossing on Old Y O Crossing Rd - 18 Miles SSW Of Roswell, NM. Note the debris field (brush piles) from the historic flash flooding on Sat, October 19, 2024. I never in my lifetime (66 years) have seen flood waters this high here before.
March will start off like a roaring lion, commencing Sunday and continuing into Wednesday morning. We have two mid-upper level storms that will sweep across the state Sunday into Tuesday.
Both of them will be windbags more than anything. High Wind Warnings. Watches and Advisories are already in effect for much of the state, including our local area.
West winds are forecast to gust up to around 50-65 mph across the southern deserts, south-central mountains, southeastern plains, eastern and northeastern plains, as well as across the central mountains Sunday into Tuesday. The Guadalupe's will see gusts on Sunday in the 75 mph neighborhood and even strong winds Monday and Tuesday.
Blowing dust will be a problem across some areas of southern, south-central, southeastern, and eastern New Mexico on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Travel may become extremely dangerous in our more dust-prone locations in the sudden drops in the visibility from dust storms with little to no advanced warning.
Critically dangerous to extremely critically dangerous fire weather conditions will also affect of the state from today into Tuesday. The fire danger will only get worse with time, so please refrain from any type of outdoor activities that involve the use of flame during Red Flag Warning days.
A few light snow showers and lowland rain showers will dot the landscape of far western, northwestern, northern, and northeastern New Mexico from these two approaching storms. A couple of inches of snow is possible across the higher mountains of northern New Mexico. Overall, nothing to write home about.
Additional watches, warnings, and advisories may be needed on Sunday, so stay alert and up to date in your areas of concern. Check for updates often.
Get ready for a dry, windy spring with a very high fire danger. Now is the time to get as prepared as possible.
