Strong to severe winds will impact northern and central New Mexico today, and thereafter a strengthening low pressure system will approach the state late Friday and cross Friday night into Saturday morning. This low pressure system will bring areas of rain and snow to northern and central New Mexico with light to moderate snow accumulations occurring over the western mountains before focusing over the northern mountains, northeast highlands, and northeastern plains of the state. Snow accumulations will generally range from 2 to 6 inches in these areas with higher amounts of 6 to 10 inches above 9,000 feet. This will lead to wintry travel with snow-packed high elevation roads and periods of reduced visibility. This will include Interstate 25 north of Santa Fe. Portions of Interstate 40 between the Arizona state line and Grants will also see wintry travel, as will areas from eastern Albuquerque to the Texas border. Lesser accumulations of a dusting to a couple of inches will be common in most other remaining areas of northern and central New Mexico. Residents and travelers throughout New Mexico should stay up-to- date on the latest forecast information at weather.gov/abq or via your preferred media outlet. Have alternative plans for travel and outdoor activities as you prepare for this period of inclement winter weather. NM NWS NDFD Peak Wind Gust Swatch Forecast.
Valid Today Through 5 PM MST Saturday.
Precipitation & Chances For Measurable Precipitation Forecasts.
Round Two This Week Starts Thursday.
A second, stronger and colder winter-like storm will plow southeastward out of the Pacific Northwest tomorrow and into New Mexico Thursday afternoon. Then it will move southeastward across the state Thursday night into Saturday morning.
Yet another high wind/blowing dust event is on tap for Thursday over much of New Mexico and West Texas. At this time, it does not appear that the winds and blowing dust will be as brutal as they were this past Monday and Tuesday. Not to say that Thursday won't be an ugly day with high winds and blowing dust because it will.
Widespread high winds and blowing dust will once again impact much of the state and nearby areas in West Texas. Southwest to west winds are forecast to increase to sustained speeds in the High Wind Warning areas to 30 to 45 mph with gusts to around 60-70 mph. Localized wind gusts may exceed forecast values in a few places.
Road clousuers will be possible again in blinding dust storms that will produce zero visibilities with little to no advanced warning.
Smoke from any wildfire or forest fire could combine with the blowing dust to create an additional hazard on local roads and highways.
Power poles, power lines, utility lines, trees, fences, and farm irrigation sprinkler systems may be blown down and damaged. Power outages are possible in some areas that experience the highest wind gusts.
Some roof damage may occur to homes, barns, and other outbuildings.
Critically Dangerous Fire Weather Conditions will also be present over the area on Thursday. Please refrain from any type of outdoor activities that involve the use of sparks or flames. Any fires that start will have the ability to rapidly spread and grow in the high winds and very dry conditions.
Numerous High Wind Watches and Warnings, Wind Advisories, Blowding Dust Advisories, Red Flag Warnings, Fire Weather Watches, and Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect Thursday for much of New Mexico.
Should this inbound winter storm slow down and dig a little further south than currently forecast, then rain and snow will be more widespread and heavier than currently forecast across the state.
