Numerous To Widespread T-Storms - Heavy Rainfall & Flash Flood Threats Today Into Sunday!
Rio Ruidoso Flash Flooding.
Overnight Rainfall Very Heavy In E & SE NM!
Numerous thunderstorms broke out over eastern and southeastern New Mexico yesterday afternoon and continued overnight into early this morning. These dumped heavy rains in some areas, and radar estimated 3" to 6" fell west and northeast of Lovington. These rainfall estimates may be a tad high since a couple of these thunderstorms were severe and produced large hail. Hail often causes radars to overestimate rainfall totals since it has a high reflectivity signature.

A near identical pattern setup is in place across the area today, so another round of numerous to widespread rainshowers and thunderstorms is expected. Once again, the heaviest rains are forecast to fall over southern, central, and eastern New Mexico.
A few marginally severe thunderstorms are possible across northeastern and eastern New Mexico this afternoon and evening.
Excessive rainfall may once again fall in some of these areas, with rainfall rates of over 3" per hour possible and 24-hour rainfall storm totals of 2" to 4" possible by Sunday morning. A few locations may see even higher totals. Sunday...wash, rinse, and repeat.
Flood Watches remain in effect for parts of eastern and southeastern New Mexico as well as the Sacramento Mountains through tonight. Flash flooding in these areas may develop rapidly, especially in those areas that received heavy rain over the past several days. This includes the Ruidoso burn scars. Other locations in the Sacramento Mountains, and eastern and southeastern New Mexico are under the gun as far as flash flooding is concerned today into Sunday.
Please do not attempt to drive, walk, or swim across flooded normally dry arroyos, small creeks, and streams. If city streets and intersections, and other flood-prone areas are flooded, stay out of them and do not attempt to drive across them. Most flash flood deaths occur at night and in vehicles.
Southeastern New Mexico has a long history of numerous flash flood events over the past 130 years. Multiple fatalities have occurred with these events. Thousands of new residents have moved into the area, who are not from this area, and have no idea how fast and how bad our flash flooding can be. Just because we've been in a four-year drought does not mean that it can't or won't flood. Quite the opposite is true. Many of our worst flash flood events have been either during droughts or at the end of them.
Remember: Turn Around - Don't Drown!
