Southeastern New Mexico experienced a variety of weather from yesterday's historic blizzard that raked eastern New Mexico and west Texas with high winds, heavy snow, and deep snow drifts. Roswell picked up 1" of snow, Ruidoso 4", Ski Apache 9", while a dusting was observed in Arteisa and Carlsbad. Areas of blowing dust and blowing sand buffeted Eddy and Lea Counties later in the day.

Interstate 40 is officially closed from the east side of Albuquerque ALL THE WAY to the TX/OK line, or approx. 390 miles! One of the biggest reasons for choosing Albuquerque is hotel capacity and ample parking for all the semi-trailer rigs, etc. A great example of significant impacts to travel (and commerce) from this major winter storm well away from the heaviest snow. Thanks to Angela Brauer (KOAT-TV) for sharing her picture of I-40 near Eubank in Albuquerque just before 6am MST Monday.

Thanks for the great summary...1.2" here, melted to .10", so cannot complain.
ReplyDeleteMy only complaint is in how the authorities forced all travelers into a nightmarish bottleneck or even parking lot. I live right where I-40 exits town through the canyon. At least they left Rt 66 open, but there was no police traffic control to override all the lights. Getting from errands to my house went from 5 to 20 minutes, but only because I know the short-cuts.
The residents along the Tramway corridor or East Mountain areas, and lodging people Tucumcari / Moriarty / Santa Rosa lodging people were all probably not any happier than me in the 1st group. So much for Tucumcari Tonite!
I think that no matter what they did this storm was going to ruin a lot of people's day.
ReplyDeleteI can only imagine just how bad that traffic must have been!
Glad we don't have to deal with that, the local oil field traffic down here is bad enough.
