Above Normal Temps First Half Of Week - Below Normal By The Weekend.

Today & Tuesday.

Hot will characterize our weather across the southeastern plains of New Mexico this Labor Day. Our afternoon high temperatures are forecast to range from the upper 90's to the low 100's today and tomorrow, with the upper 90's for most of the rest of the week. Our afternoon high temps today will be about 10-degrees above normal, and 10 to 15-degrees above normal on Tuesday.

A weak upper-level disturbance moving over the top of upper-level ridge of high pressure parked overhead, will add enough instability to help fire off some widely scattered thunderstorms, mostly over and near the mountains today and tomorrow.

Strong Cold Front End Of This Week.

Valid At 6 AM MDT Saturday September 8, 2012.

High pressure aloft will rule our weather most of this week, keeping our afternoon high temperatures above normal for most of the week. By the end of the week an upper-level trough of low pressure is forecast by the models to swing across northern plains. This trough will kick a fairly strong cold front southward, which should arrive in southeastern New Mexico by Friday night or Saturday morning.

Cooler temperatures will overspread the area behind the front. Our afternoon highs will be some 10 to 15-degrees below normal, possibly as early as Friday if the front arrives sooner than currently being forecast. But definitely so on Saturday. Most of us should see highs only in the 80's, but Id bet a few spots won't get out of the 70's either. Our chances for seeing some decent thunderstorm activity should increase as the cold front surges southward.

  2. That's great news on the cool front heading into NM this coming weekend, especially if it actually rains some. While 96F in Abq is not unheard of (nor is 100F) in early Sept, this continued lack of rain and dry air (up here) is.
