Image
April 29, 2026.  Altocumulus Standing Lenticular Clouds. Streaming Northeast Off Of The Guadalupe Mountains. A backdoor cold front lies draped across the area this afternoon. Cooler temps overspread the area behind the front with the coolest highs in the 50s across northern and northeastern New Mexico. Highs across southeastern New Mexico ranged from near 70 in the Roswell area to the low-mid 80s in the Carlsbad area.  A reinforcing shot of cooler and more moist air will overspread the eastern half of the state on Thursday. Highs on Thursday will range from near 50 in the northeastern plains, near 60 across the eastern plains, and the 70s in southeastern New Mexico.  Friday will be a chilly, cloudy to overcast, and dreary day across much of the state from the central mountain chain eastward, with highs mostly in the 40's and 50's. Some 30's are expected in the northern mountains. Highs west of the central mountain chain will be in the 60s and 70s.  High temps from th...

April 25, 2026. Carlsbad, New Mexico. Altocumulus Standing Lenticular Clouds. New Mexico's weather today into Tuesday will be on the ugly side, especially today. Today's themes include damaging winds, widespread blowing dust, and critically dangerous to extremely critically dangerous fire weather conditions.  Southwest to west winds are forecast to become sustained at 30 to 40 mph with gusts near 60 mph over the central mountain chain and eastern New Mexico.  High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories remain in effect for much of the state through this evening. A High Wind Warning remains in effect for the Guadalupe and Delaware Mountains of Eddy and Culberson Counties through 9 PM MDT Monday evening. Critically Dangerous Fire Weather Today - Damaging Winds/Blowing Dust Sunday!

Image
April 21, 2026. High-Based Dry T-Storm. Looking North From The Carlsbad Truck Bypass. New Mexico's fire weather season is upon us, and we already have a couple of fires active across the state. The Tusas fire near Sapello, NM, in San Miguel County, is the largest. See the Watch Duty Map link below (via my blog post link) to view all current fire activity in the state. The Otero County Electric Cooperative has cut power to some residents in the Alto area north of Ruidoso as a precaution due to the Red Flag Warning and high winds. See their link and Facebook article below via my blog post link.  We may have to deal with fire weather conditions until the start of our annual summer monsoon, which normally begins around the middle of June. However, we have entered neutral El Niño conditions with some forecasts indicating that  El Niño  may return by June. We can only hope for an early and wet start this year.  There is some hope that an upper-level low will drop into the ...

New All-Time March Record High Temps - Recent Rainfall Totals - El Niño By Summer?

Image
January 30, 2026. Devon Energy Yard - In Atoka, South Of Artesia. New All-Time New Mexico March 2026 Daily/Monthly Record High Temperatures.  New Mexico saw its hottest March on record (135 years of records). A phenomenal total of 141 new all-time March record high temperatures were broken in the state. With another 29 all-time monthly record highs tied. During this past March, there were 586 new daily record high temperatures that were set, with another 59 daily records tied.  There are simply far too many records set during this past March for me to list them in this blog post, so click on the link above to view them. A March to remember for sure!  Many of these new all-time monthly records across the state were set, breaking previous all-time records going back to at least 1907, and then a few days later, those new records were broken.  The Carlsbad Airport ASOS set an amazing all-time March record high of 103 on the 26th, which beat the previous records of 100 on...

Increasing Chances For T-Storms This Evening & Overnight - Severe T-Storms Saturday!

Image
April 9, 2026. Virga North Of Brantley Lake.  A deep early spring mid-upper level closed low was parked just off the northwestern coast of California late this afternoon. It will kick out a series of disturbances that will rotate northeast across the state tonight into Sunday. This, with strengthening southwesterly winds aloft, will add instability to the atmosphere tonight into Sunday.  The dryline has backed west into the Pecos Valley the past couple of mornings, producing low clouds and dew point temperatures in the 50s. It will back westward up against the central mountain chain of the state tonight into Saturday. Increasing low-level moisture in the return flow upon southeasterly winds will advect lots of moisture east of the dryline tonight and Saturday. Low clouds and areas of fog will be possible late tonight into Saturday morning.  As of 5 PM MDT this Friday afternoon, several severe thunderstorms have popped up over eastern New Mexico near Tucumcari and Clovis. ...

High Winds/Blowing Dust/High Fire Danger/High Mtn Snows Northern NM Return Wednesday.

Image
March 11, 2026. Dusty Sunrise In Hobbs, NM. Our afternoon high temps this afternoon in southeastern New Mexico are forecast to be near 90. Wednesday through Friday will be a tad bit cooler with highs in the mid to upper 80's. Saturday and Sunday will see highs near 70.  A Mix of wet and dry, scattered thunderstorms is forecast to break out over central and western New Mexico today. Dry lightning strikes may ignite new fires, and erratic wind gusts may produce localized areas of blowing dust from these storms.  A few light scattered rain showers will be possible over the Gila Region and Sacramento mountains on Wednesday. Nothing to write home about though.  Strong southwesterly to westerly winds will gust up to around 50 mph along and east of the central mountain chain Wednesday through Friday. Localized areas of blowing dust may develop during the stronger gusts.  The dryline will set up camp along the New Mexico and Texas state line on Wednesday afternoon before mix...

From 100 to 40!

Image
February 22, 2026. Brantley Lake Sunset. I can't believe I'm writing this, but I recorded a high temp in my backyard on my Davis Vantage Pro2 Wireless Weather Station of 103F. There have been summers in southeastern New Mexico that didn't get this hot...and it's still March. I pray this isn't an early indicator of how hot it will be this summer. The Carlsbad Airport has registered 103 so far, the Roswell and Artesia Airports 100, and the Hobbs Airport 99.  Many areas of the state have shattered their all-time March monthly high temperatures by as much as ten degrees over the past week. I'll post a summary of these in a few days. After days on end with record high temps, both daily and in some cases all-time monthly (March), a backdoor cold front will plow south and west late tonight into Friday morning through the state.  Friday will be an ugly, windy, dusty day for much of the state east of the mountains. Temperatures will drop behind the frontal passage, and f...

Many All-Time March Record High Temps To Be Shattered Thursday Into Sunday!

Image
March 11, 2026. Dusty Sunrise - Hobbs, NM. A massive dome of mid and high-level high pressure is forecast to set up over southern California and Arizona today through the weekend. Heights, or a measure of atmospheric pressure aloft, are forecast to be near record levels with this abnormally and unusually strong high-pressure dome. Sinking air beneath this dome of high pressure will be compressed and warmed. Lee side troughing along and east of New Mexico's central mountain chain will also cause compressional heating. Dry downslopping southwesterly winds will add to the mix. A historic heatwave is forecast to break out over the southern half of Arizona, southern Nevada, and the southern and southwestern areas of California, from Thursday into Sunday. Daily record high temperatures and some all-time March record high temperatures are forecast to be broken. Forecast highs range from near 100 to near 110.  New Mexico will not escape this insane heatwave, and many daily and even some Ma...

Chance For Rain Showers & Isolated T-Storms - High Mtn Snow Showers Mon-Tue.

February 25, 2026. Old Y O Crossing Rd. 2 Miles South Of The Roswell Industrial Air Center Airport.  Altocumulus Standing Lenticular Clouds (ACSL) & Tumbleweeds. Not all springs in New Mexico come roaring like a lion at the start of March. So far this year, our meteorological spring has sprung more like a lamb. In fact, boring weather comes to mind more often than not of late, which isn't a bad thing given this is our driest and windiest time of the year. We've had a break so far this winter and an early start to our spring compared to the last several years. Our annual windbags and duststorms haven't been that bad and have been few and far between each event. Let's hope it stays that way.   A weak Pacific cold front will slide across the state Monday night into Tuesday morning. Basically, very little cooling with this front other than knocking our daytime highs back down closer to norms for this time of the year.  A cut-off upper-level low centered northwest of ...

Fast-Moving Pacific Storm To Bring More Wind/Blowing Dust/Critically Dangerous Fire Weather Conditions Friday!

Image
January 25, 2026. Carlsbad, New Mexico. We got off to a slow start as far as the wind and dust were concerned yesterday here in southeastern New Mexico. That all changed around 5 PM when once again dust from southern New Mexico and northern Mexico was transported northeastward by strong southwesterly winds. Visibilities dropped down to around 3 miles in the Artesia and Carlsbad areas and 5 miles in the Lovington and Hobbs areas.  A peak wind gust of 61 mph was clocked by the Carlsbad Airport ASOS at 11:12 PM MST last night. Other wind gusts recorded after midnight include: 81 mph at the West Texas Mesonet Station west of the Carlsbad Caverns National Park Visitor Center. They gusted to 89 mph after midnight last night.  59 mph at the San Augustin Raws in Organ Pass, east of Las Cruces. 57 mph at the Dunken and Queen Raws. 55 mph at the Pinery Raws at Pine Springs in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Peak Wind Gusts measured Wednesday afternoon and evening include the foll...

Storm Summary 2-18-2026 - Round Two With More Snow/High Winds/Blowing Dust/Critically Dangerous Fire Weather Conditions Today!

Image
January 30, 2026. Atoka, New Mexico. Waiting To Be Fed After The Storm. A large area of blowing dust originating in northern Mexico, southwest of El Paso, overspread southeastern New Mexico yesterday afternoon, partially obscuring the sky. Blowing sand from Whites Sands and blowing dust from southwestern New Mexico joined the mix. That sent everyone's allergies and sinus issues into overdrive. Visibility in the blowing dust dropped as low as 3/4 to 1 mile over southern New Mexico and 3-5 miles in southeastern New Mexico. Yesterday's peak wind gust winner was the San Augustin Raws located in Organ Pass along US Hwy 70, east of Las Cruces, with a peak wind gust measured at 98 mph. A gust to 72 mph was recorded at Carlsbad Caverns West Texas Mesonet Station, as well as in Pine Springs in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park.  A gust of 72 mph was recorded by the Raton Airport ASOS, and 70 mph at the Clayton Airport ASOS. And the Sierra Blanca Regional Airport AWOS, located northe...

Dangerous High Wind/Blowing Dust/Fire Weather Event Tuesday!

Image
February 5, 2026. Altocumulus Standing Lenticular Cloud - ACSL Snow Covering Ocotillo Foothills - NW Of Carlsbad, NM. At 2:00 PM MST, my backyard Davis Vantage Pro2 Plus Wireless Station has already reached 83. It's 81 at the Carlsbad Airport, 80 in Lakewood, and at the Artesia Airport. Even at Runyan Ranches (5,458') east of Elk, it's 80. These temps are some twenty degrees above normal for mid February. Such has been the case for much of the fall and winter.  Get ready to go for a very bumpy, windy, dusty rollercoaster ride in New Mexico from Tuesday through Thursday. Tuesday will just be a flat-out ugly day in most places with damaging high winds and areas of blowing dust, tumble weeds, and needle grass, particularly from the central mountain chain eastward out onto the northeastern, eastern, and southeastern plains. Numerous High Wind Warnings, High Wind Watches, Wind Advisories, Blowing Dust Advisories, Red Flag Warnings, Fire Weather Watches, Winter Storm Warnings, an...
