 "A rapid response contained a wildfire near Ruidoso Downs Thursday afternoon but not before it destroyed several homes and force panicked residents of a forested subdivision to flee.
The fire, reported at 3 p.m., a spokesperson for the village of Ruidoso government told News 13. Shortly after 5 p.m. the incident commander reported the forward progress of the fire had been stopped with firefighters mopping up hot spots.
Firefighters were still mopping up hotspots.
Earlier the mayor of Ruidoso said the quick-moving fire destroyed seven or eight homes.
Initial reports said the fire began behind the K-Bob's on U.S. Highway 70 and moved rapidly up a slope into the Pine Cliff subdivision.
Aerial video from News 13's Skyranger showed several homes reduced to smolder rubble on both sides of one street just south of U.S. 70. 
At 4:15 p.m. the fire was estimated at 10 acres. Flames were moving east and northeast on the south side of U.S. 70, officials said.
Ruidoso Village Manager Debbie Lee told News 13 there are about 400 homes in the Pine Cliff Subdivision.  The evacuation order extendrd from Pine Cliff to the Walmart on U.S. 70."
