Early this morning out next approaching Major Winter Storm was located over Central Arizona. This mornings 12Z/5 AM MST run of the NAM-WRF forecast model has the upper-level storm closing off just a tad west of the New Mexico Bootheel by sunset today. It is then forecast to be located just south of El Paso by sunrise tomorrow morning, and then by sunset tomorrow afternoon, it is forecast to be located just to the south of Carlsbad over West Texas.

This is another cold upper-level storm with a cold pool of around -27C/-17F at the storms center, therefore it will have lots of available energy and lift to work with. Forecast liquid storm total amounts of around .50" to 1.00" of equivalent precipitation, indicate that this storm may produce a lot of widespread moderate to heavy snowfall across SE NM and parts of West Texas.

Widespread snowfall totals of 5" - 7" are currently being forecast for our area, with localized snowfall totals exceeding 10" in some places. Convective snow bands along with the possibility of thunder snow may produce snowfall rates of 2" - 4" per hour in a few spots.

Due to drought weakened tree limbs, gusty northeasterly winds, and heavy snow loading on the weakened tree limbs, scattered power outages will be a possibility across some parts of SE NM, and West Texas late tonight into tomorrow night.

Dangerous to impossible driving conditions are expected to develop across the area later tonight and will prevail into Tuesday morning. Some road closures will be possible in the area due to low visibilities, heavy snow, and localized blowing and drifting snow, especially over and near the mountains.

Model forecasts indicate the possibility of yet another closed upper-level low moving south of the area Wednesday night into Thursday, along with the potential for more snow across the area. A third and stronger upper-level storm may impact the state and local area next weekend.

The Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction!

  1. You all do need the moisture, but these cold storms...too much! Guess I need to appreciate the last week of quiet.
